Given the weather and our field tracks, which are deep Wealden clay, I'm desperate to find some decent wellies that also have soles with a good grip. My walking boots have the right soles but mud comes over the top!! And my present wellies are more like ice skates on the mud - lethal when dealing with lively youngsters, high winds and sticky gates ....

Can anyone recommend wellies that have really, really good grippy soles??

Hi - I have just brought a pair of Muckboots style/model TAY - they are part of the Field range and not equestrian so have a fab grip.

The mud in our fields is already half way up your shin, and I also use them for walking my dogs and are the best pair I've ever had for both - won;t buy anything else now.

I had my horses on clay for 15 years and found Le Chameaus the best by far- they are quite expensive but worth every penny. I have had my leather lined pair for 7 years (up until last year they were worn day in and day out) and they are showing no signs of wear. They keep your feet nice and warm too

I am quite keen on my Ariat Mud Busters. Not hugely expensive & with a really good tread (non slip) & so far quite hard-wearing.

I bought them at Badminton this year so have already out-lived my last couple of pairs of Hunters.

Defintely not Hunters

Daughter has again gone through a pair in less than a year without much effort. Will not buy any more ever (never thought I'd say that!). Muck Boots are very warm, but they rub the backs of my legs at the bottom of the soft part. Sorry, not much use really!

I find Le Chameau boots too narrow round the ankle to wear with jeans (ok with breeches), though they're really warm. Hunter wellies aren't as good as they used to be years ago, they don't last long now. Like the sound of muck boots and will look at these after Christmas unless Santa brings me some!

Thanks everyone, incredibly helpful! I'm going away to research all the suggestions at my local tack shops, and look forward to a winter where my feet are warm and I'm not skidding around out of control at the end of a lead rope!! (Mind you, I think that would describe me even without the dreaded wellies ....
