Its got to be short, as im mega busy at work and my boss is lurking around

Hes never been to Wellington before so all things considering, and considering it was only his third elementary he was a little star.

He warmed up beautifully until some stupid child climbed on the haybales with her dog just as i rode past and scared the living daylights out of us both
mad.gif
I proptly told her and her mother off, but Archie got really upset and tense, and it was 5mins before we were due to go in
mad.gif
Got him to relax again finally, just before we went in.

The arena is REALLY spooky, LOADS going on to look at, as the yard is on the left, and then another warmup arena at the bottom, and people sat in the stands, and people walking backwards and forwards across the field on the right to the secretaries tent.

As soon as we got in he was really tense, but didnt do anything naughty. The judge rang the bell really quickly as i was first to go after the break so i hardly had chance to trot around the arena. Started off really nicely, he was tense but well behaved and listening to me. First canter transition he exploded across the arena bucking
blush.gif
However we got it back and carried on and i was pleased with the rest of the test apart from the reinback which was a bit crooked and our final halt when he wouldnt stand still

Anyways, got 63% from one judge and 66% from the other
crazy.gif
I was the only person with a huge mark difference
mad.gif
It averaged me out at 64.85%. I felt he did a test worthy of about 65/66% and was really pleased with how he went. Anyways, we came 8th and im still really chuffed with how he behaved.

Unfortunately he had his devil horns on in the prize giving and nearly caterpaulted me into the judges box in the lap of honur, i swore VERY loudly and i think the judge thought i was going to end up in the box with her as they were waiting to start the next test
blush.gif
grin.gif
Anyways, i stayed on and Archie enjoyed it

I spoke to the judge who gave me the low mark afterwards and she told me my ring-craft was bad
mad.gif
I have never EVER been told my ring craft is bad, and the other judge wrote at the bottom that it was beautifully ridden
crazy.gif
She then asked who i trained with and i said Andrew Gould, and she proceeded to insinuate that his ring-craft was poor aswell and suggested i got another trainer
mad.gif
She was SO rude i couldnt believe it. They are meant to be there to be helpful, not criticise. In two places she'd given me a 5 and the other judge had given me 8
crazy.gif

Anyways, i knew i wouldnt come in the top 2, and im just pleased we got in the prize giving, so he got some more experience at that.

Onwards and upwards to the YH Finals on Saturday now
crazy.gif

Well done - I think those are very good marks given the circumstances. I think the lower marking judge is totally out of order - has she never heard of constructive critisism!

Good luck for the young horse classes!

Judges can be helpful without being rude no excuse for that.
mad.gif
It was still a good mark so well done. Glad Archie enjoyed the prize giving.

Good luck on Saturday.

Exactly, and i wouldnt have minded if what she was saying was correct, but it wasnt.

She gave me a 5 for my counter canter - which was a 1/2 10m circle returning to the track BETWEEN V and E - she wrote 'returned to the track before E'
crazy.gif
The other judge gave me and 8 and wrote 'nicely ridden and balanced' This is why i initially went to speak to her, as i wanted to find out why she gave me a 5 and wrote that. She back tracked and said that it i returned 'after E' and it was a writer error - whatever
crazy.gif
(and i know i returned before E)

I think you were brave to talk to the judge, I know some don't really like it as they could end up with a queue of 30 people wanting to discuss what they thought which would take forever. The marks sound very good if he is inexperienced at that level and a bit tense, if you add marks for the bucking trans ,the crooked rein back and lack of halt it would have been a really good mark. Lots of time to learn and improve

Well done as i found out the other day some judges just have sh*t in their eyes !!

Good luck for this weekend im sure you and archie will continue to do really well x x

wierdly enough neither judge wrote that he was tense - he felt tense to me tho!

[/ QUOTE ]

Well that is a good sign really - but on a nother day and a different judge they may have picked up on it ?

Oh well done- all things considering! Sounds like it was a hell of an atmosphere for him to cope with, so he was great to have held it all together and got the mark he did!
Forgive me but what does that mean- bad ringcraft? Rude judge tho!

Nothing much we can do about judges, their likes and dislikes we will have to put up with.My friend did a dressage to music the other day and it was lovely .When I saw her last week I commented on it and said she was robbed as it was brilliant. She said there is a complaint in BE about it, her friend was the writer, which the judge didn't know, and as she entered the ring the judge said 'Oh, its her,I never give her a good mark as she judged my daughter at pony club once and placed her last' I hope that judge is banned from judging

oh my god that is awful !!!! x

I know I have kept quiet about it but I am so cross about it ,I have seen judges mark other judges high because they are in the clique but this is the worst I have heard. She wouldn't have won because one girl had 2 really super horses [got 80% plus] in but she should have come 3rd by a mile.

That is absolutely disgusting and I hope she is banned.

Sounds good to me, I'll be very pleased if I get that at my area festival. Pity about the spook attack, guess it could happen to anyone though, I feel for you as I have a spook monster too and it only takes something like that to ruin the whole test with tension.

Sounds pretty good going given what a monkey he can be and how spooky the arena was!

Was it the rude judge Archie tried to launch you at - maybe he was trying to get his own back...

The difference between 5 and 8 is massive, makes you wonder if they were judging the same test?
As a judge you have to know exactly which movements you are judging and never blame your writer!! I think it is the judges responsibility when doing the collectives and final comments to scan the sheet and make sure all is in order before they let it go.
Obviously there are always going to be inconsistencies because of personal preference but judges that are blatantly biased is a disgrace to the sport. Nothing should make you waiver from looking at everyone individually and judging the movements on accuracy and correctness, it doesn't matter whether its the local show or the Olympics!

Well she seemed a bit resigned to it, what can you do /prove but I hope her complaint is acted on but I'm not sure it will be.
I wouldn't bother asking judges about why they marked a movement down , they are not going to change the mark . I saw one person arguing with a judge about their sheet once and thought it pointless. I have certainly disagreed with marks and thought they must be blind and will moan on here [ that's what we are here for ,for a gossip and moan and a chat] but we will have to accept judging ,hard as it is, I know.

Talking to the Judge afterwards should be constructive, and we should learn from them... !!!!!! did you video it? You should have shown her!! Nevermind, I had over 25 points difference once!! Didnt realise you could speak to the Judge afterwards... if this happens again I will just enquire, as I am sure it will, it has happened even to the "pros"!

At least you got to do the roundy roundy!!!!

i didnt argue, but i was curious about why she'd marked me like that when id got an 8 from the other judge. I think its interesting talking to the judges anyways as you find out whats wrong and what they like/disliked about your test. I often talk to the judges after my tests whether ive got a good or bad mark.

Like i said im not bothered about my mark as i wasnt expecting to qualify anyways, i was just interested as to her answer.

I might add i would never ever argue with a judge
crazy.gif
And i know there is nothing that can be done after the test has finished aswell

thanx hun, its such a shame you didnt get to go. is there any other one you can get to?

I did wonder why i didnt see your name down.

We've just entered for Patchetts at the end of the month so fingers crossed that there are no more postal strikes! All sounds a bit dodgy to me.

p.s really agree with that comment about how it is the judges responsibility to check the scoresheets before they're handed in! I would have thought they'd be religious about that

I'm not saying you argued and we all want to learn just not sure it helps, they see what they see and we feel what we feel. Better to video and look at the sheets and their comments after. I used to judge quite a lot after I retired from competing but found it very stressful as I like to please everyone and some didn't feel what I saw. Can you see my point about everyone wanting to talk about their marks, it could be time consuming.I know you had a concern but not sure it helped talking to her!
Having said that we did a young horse class and the judge stood by the sheets and wanted to talk about developing each horse ,which was great.
Just my opinion, not criticism
