We have just got a Welsh Mountain pony at work, 12hh 13 yrs old, Silver grey (very white), very very cute. We have been told he is very safe and sensible. He is for my bosses son.
How much weight do you think he could carry comfortably? I have no idea.

Generally 8 stone max, my boy at 11.1hh carries about 7 1/2 stone sometimes (he's on loan, I don't ride him, I'd squash him!!!)

Do you think 8.5 stone is too heavy then? It will only be for half hour or so a week. We have a girl that is willing to ride him once/twice a week, just to keep him ticking over but she is 8.5 stone.

Depends if it is a sturdy Welsh A and a good - therefore light - rider. A few hours a week should be OK.
Pulling a cart is completely different!

Rider is not bad, she won't bounce about or land heavy etc.
He is a sturdy little guy that is fit and it won't be for that longm, just so he can come off lead rein and have a bit of fun.

Depends on the build and to be honest, what he has been used to. My 11hh section A would struggle with someone who was 8.5 stone. Why not teach him to long rein and then he gets the work as well as enjoying himself. We have the same problem with Toby's pony as we want the pony to have some fun so that he behaves well when Toby rides him. At the moment we have two people who are both under 8 stone who ride him a couple of times a week, but he is also going to start long reining soon.

He long reins, lunges, goes on the walker, everything, I just didn't think it was that fun for him. I suppose he can have a hoon round on the lunge, jump some jumps etc.

OK, try this is a hypothetical example.

try carrying a bag of coal over your shoulder, then try moving it in a wheelbarrow.

You don't get the principle there do you? It doesn't matter what the weight, pulling a full grown man is not the same as carrying an 8 stone rider, as you inferred.
A miniature shetland - say 34" - could pull an 8 stone person in a cart, but you wouldn't expect it to carry an 8 stone person would you.

Why?!!

Have you ever tried picking up one of those driving carts - I was amazed at how light it was when you get it to a level position, even with someone sat in it.

Put that same person on my back and you'd hear a few choice words.

Nobody said they can't but some finer ones might not be able to.
