I'm taking my 13.1 welsh b mare to her first show this weekend, into a mountain and moorland class. I'm planning on showing her in hand in a couple of classes, but I have absolutely no experience in showing welsh ponies! So anything you could tell me to help will be greatly appreciated! :D
She's 4 years old, so I understand that she has to be shown in bitted bridle. Is this just with reins, or do I take the reins off and attach a chain and lead?
I have no clue what to even do in the ring, but am planning on following the others! :p
I've read that they aren't to be plaited at all, and have to look as natural as possible.
It's going to be pretty hot, so I think I can just wear a waistcoat rather than a tweed jacket? Along with cream jods, white shirt and a tie?
Thank you for any tips you can give :D

Hi, I have a Welsh Sec B mare as well :D

If they are over 3yrs, they should be shown in an in hand bridle, with plain browband and noseband (no fancy coloured browbands) natural mane and tail. Tail should not be banged (cut straight accross). Small amount of tidying are allowed.

I have shown in a shirt, tie and smart waistcoat on hot days, or jacket on cooler days. I wear a velvet hunting cap on my head, but I have seen people showing in soft/fashion hats.

How's yours bred?

Best of luck with your first show :)

Waistcoat and shirt with a tie is fine, or tweed jacket.
I would go for trousers rather than jods. Normally they would be the opposite to you ponies legs i.e. White socks or grey pony = dark trouser and vice versa.
Flat cap or trilby style hat or hair tied back and tidy.
Its a good idea to carry a showing cane
As she is a 4y/o she can wear a riding bridle, inhand bridle or white halter. I prefer a chain/lead to reins but it doesn't matter too much.

Welsh should be shown au naturel. Although a small amount of tidying up is permitted. Tails should not be banged (cut straight) manes not plaited although a long poll plait to show off the jaw line is ok. No trimming of feathers. Plenty of brushing before and hot cloth her the night before (with water & vinegar) to really bring out a shine :D

Once you enter the ring you will walk clockwise. The steward will then stop you all in a corner and you take it in turns to trot around the ring. Keep an eye on the judge, if they are still watching keep trotting.
You will then be asked to all line up, sometimes in a preferred order, sometimes in any order.
One by one you will step forward to the judge, standing with front two legs even if possible and square trying to make her look as alert as possible.
Then, when asked, walk away from the judge, turn always keeping her on the inside of you (never get between the judge and the pony). Walk a step or two towards the judge then trot directly towards them, they will step aside don't worry. Keep trotting around the back of the line up, again not stopping until the judge turns away.
Job done! Well almost, remember your pony is on show all the time, even when you think they are not looking!

Section B fillies/mares tend to be shown in filly slips (leather bridles without bits) But if you haven't got one of those, pop a simple snaffle bridle in,but if you do this imo would look better with a coupling underneath with leather lead attached rather than reins.
Not to be plaited, 'lightly' pulled mane and trimmed discreetly.
Outfit sounds fine, if really hot wear a waistcoat- but personally I prefer a jacket as I think it just finishes the look, also trousers would be more suitable.

Good luck, and enjoy! :D

Thank you so much for all your brilliant answers!
Unfortunately, i've only had her for a matter of weeks, and her tail was already banged when she came to me
I'll try and remember all that, but hopefully will be able to watch a few classes before me to see what they all do! :p
