Welsh breed sentenced for cruelty

There seems to be a distinct lack of interest in this case on horse and hound forum. Is it because the RSPCA got it right? Or because it's in north Wales and therefore not of interest as it's so far away?

This is an awful case, symptomatic of all that is wrong with the horse world right now.

I don't think there is necessarily a lack of interest, but maybe one can only sigh, I would encourage ALL horse lovers, all animal lovers to keep an eye out .......... people don't need to get involved, all it takes is one phone call to alert the RSPCA, maybe that does not always work, but when I rescued My Boy, the field was roadside, there were other horses kept in field next door, the former BHW welfare officer had horses two fields away, yet no one noticed they had no food and no water ............. no one cared enough.

This has been an ongoing problem with this breeder for many years and people have repeatedly reported this person over severe welfare issues of his breeding stock. He should have a lifetime ban.

Oh maybe cause its happening too often now that its just 'another' welfare case

^^^^^^^^this, most definitely.

He has also put the remaining ponies in his daughter's name, so what is to so stop him just carrying on as before once he is out of prison?

The WPCS have kept very quiet about this case but there is a petition ongoing to try to get them to strip him of his life membership and his status and privileges as a judge. I think that they should also stop registering ponies from his stud with his prefix.

I think it's more a case of 'just another awful cruelty conviction that has resulted in a pathetic outcome'

People might show more interest if these people were given proper jail time, life time bans and seizure of assets to cover costs of nursing surviving horses back to health/humanely destroying the ones with no hope.

yes maybe but agree they should pay for rehabilitation and get life bans cause we all know they will do it again

When the RSPCA take any case to court they request reimbursement of costs of care of all animals involved, plus costs of bringing the case to court in most cases. It's quite uncommon for any remote cost be ordered to the defendant so the RSPCA usually end up out of pocket.

I think that as much as we care, as much as it breaks us to see suffering, there is so much of it, it seems like nowadays every day there is a case like this, and whilst we are angry and outraged we kind of feel a little bit numb and helpless, a bit like this is how it is, we internally sigh that there are people out there like this.

I for one am no fan of the general behaviour of the RSPCA when it comes to horses, but I am in this case happy that they have got a result, yes, for us as a group of horse lovers this sentence is way to lenient but any result at the moment is better than none in my opinion. This man could have got off Scott free or he could still be neglecting and abusing animals... It's a start, and a small bit of positivity.

I had actually posted a thread about Evan Evans and his ban... Although horse and hound reported the initial investigation I haven't seen anything regarding the sentence? WPCS look after the " big boys" in my opinion ( and yes as a breeder and owner I am a member through necessity) but they always keep a low profile in cases like this instead of sending a clear message that members will be stripped of prefixes, membership and be unable to show, own or have any dealings with ponies ever again if they are convicted of cruelty or neglect.
No prefix=no value to these people.
I can only hope that the welfare societies continue to monitor the situation because in a few short weeks he will be out and no doubt flouting the pathetic ban that was handed out. If his daughter is responsible enough to take over ownership of these ponies why didn't she act before the situation got this bad? Answer: because it was nothing new and had been like this for years despite WHW saying that threads such as this were " without grounding".
I rest my case. May those ponies rest in peace :/
Right, rant over!
