Welsh Cob Section D - age related question?

Hello,

Just wondered how old your ridden Welsh Cob's are. I know they mature late, but do they live longer too?

Just realised that after 10 years of ownership my horse is now in his teens and I'm beginning to worry about his age. Doesn't look like he's any older, but when enquiring about insurance a few companies mentioned 'now he's getting older' and it made me think.

At what age is a Welsh Section Section D old?

My sec D was 32 when pts. still very much missed too.

My mates Welsh Cob is 15 and showing no signs of age at all! Still think he's a 2 year old I think! He still jumps, tanks off across the moors and really enjoys life! My horse isn't a Welshie, but a WB who is 18, and again is showing no signs of getting older, he too still LOVES his jumping, and I have to ride him nearly everyday or he becomes quite a handful!! So don't worry, they are in their prime in their teens!!! x

Hmm, mine's turning 16 I think, got her when she was 10.....still no different now or showing any sign of slowing down!!!! Quite the opposite really.....

My Welsh D will be 17 next month, but you would never be able to tell this when you see him. He still acts like a 3yr old xx

I have an 18yr old Sec D who still happily does XC/SJ/Showing and has done a few team chases to!

Although Mister Jay retired 2 years ago, he is still a loon out in the field.
He was retired under the advice of our chiro as he had sacro illiac problems (confo related, not age). She said that we could continue to hack him, just no dressage. He was never happy hacking, so consequently we retired him.
He's 20 now, and is just as spritely as ever, and tows me everywhere with a cheeky grin! He dances around the younger ponies, and plays games all day - they get annoyed with his antics!

Many thanks for your encouraging replies. Think it's the insurance companies who worried me most with their coments about him being older. I still see him as perfectly fit and healthy and not an OAP.

Mine is 25. He's only just a D at 13.3. He is growing old disgracefully since we turned him out with a rather randy 5yo 15.3 TB mare. He has been, um, "doing the business" at least once a day as far as we can work out.

I only retired him from ridden work because although he had been fit and muscled to carry me he was badly bitten on the neck a few years ago now and it did so much damage with the crushing and the following exotic infections that he was too unfit for me to ride. He's not lungeable (has complete hysterics, last time I tried it I ended up unconcious for goodness knows how long with a wicked black eye and lump on my head and a good dose of concussion) so I can't really get him fit.

He's much loved and we hope there's lots of life in him yet, vet seems to think so as he's apparently in amazing condition for his age and despite him not being in work. "Could last another 10 years" was a recent quote!

Insurance companies drive me nuts. I can only get a veteran policy for Lukey, then I can only cover him for injury not illness. Oh and I can only insure him up to £1500 vets fees. To me a horse is knocking on a bit once it reaches it's 20's. Then a veteran policy would be ok, NOT for a horse in it's teens, thats not old!!

I havea section D cross who will be 18next year, although she has arthritusshe still has plenty of go and hasnt lost her spooktacular edge. A couple of weeks ago she bolted downt he road at a beer can rolling towards her and to run her into the hedge

My section d x tb is 13yo atm and is still out there competing at sj champs- no signs of slowing down. Hopefully he has many many years left in him. He's on loan atm and when he returns to me in 2 years I'm just going to keep him as a happy hack- no more serious competing for the old boy just a relaxed life (although I doubt that will be to his liking!)

My lovely Sec D is 16....17 in April and he's still ridden 5 days a week, hacking, a bit of work in the school, local shows and Dressage and still Loves to jump

my little lass is only 12 but her sight is going god love her - shes happpy healthy and god do i wish i had her before the bas**tard did cause given her background and sight shes such a brave mare - wow what a mare she would have been across country

Mine is 6... However I agree that horses are living longer and being healthy for much longer and do not agree with insurance companies saying veteran policies kick in at 15. It also puts people off of buying an older horse.

I am hoping that Genie will still be in a fair amount of work and doing what she loves best (showing and eating) when she's well into her twenties... time will tell!

mine will be 18 in march, tbh he is not much different just fitter than he was when I bought him at 12. I do think he is sometimes more inclined to be stiffer the day after an event sometimes now but he is still very busy being an allrounder and hopefully will get to go hunting again this year and I have just affiliated him with BD

petplan will insure for illness up to 25 I think, I just changed his policy when he hit 17 and the premium was cheaper than what paid SEIB the previous year

my old boy is 24 and has just won 4 out of 6 veteran classes this yr (2nd in the other 2) and won the finals at the championships. He still thinks he's 4 and he doesn't look old either!
