I have a 14.1hh Welsh sec. D (welsh cob) and i find it so hard to feed her and get the right balance!
She was on Allen&Page fast fibre but didn't east it so i moved her back to HiFi Lite and Pony Nuts and now shes getting to fat.
What do i feed!?
I also feed her garlic and equivite :)x

Knock off the pony nuts at least and just give her the hi fi lite if you feel you need to give her anything at all. She'd do fine on just hay though ;)

I agree with this. If she is overweight she doesn't need hard feed. Just stick to the chop and additives if you want to, and plenty of good quality hay. What kind of work is she in at the moment?

Why are you feeding her in the first place? She doesn't need anything other than grass (usually restricted) or hay if she's keeping weight. If you want to feed a broad spectrum supplement just give it in a handful of chaff.

see my cobs (welsh!) would be hatracks if they didnt get fed or got rations like some suggest! must be metabolism differences, they get plenty of work and a balanced diet so dont store every last morsel.

That is why you feed according to condition and workload, not according to type or breed!

I don't think thats the right approach. My Welsh Cob is a natural born fatty who would be fine on no hard feed if he was a happy hacker or in low level work but he's worked 6 days a week schooling towards medium, has rationed hay, limited turnout and therefore requires something to top up the vits & minerals as well as something to give him the energy and sparkle for his work...without his current small feed he is a very lazy beastie.

OP could I have some more details please, work load, turn out and quality of hay & grass.

As TGM said, each horse is an individual and what you feed should reflect this!

All 3 of my welshies have the same food just different amounts depending on workload etc and they keep a fab wieght over winter - i dont feed in summer
Speedibeet
Spillers Lite Balencer
Local shops own Mollichop chaff

I agree it depends on condition and workload. I will assume she isn't preparing to go round Badminton, so cut down the amount of feed.

My D is on a handful of chaff and half a handful of coolmix once a day. I do give her a vits and mins supplement though. And I still can't stop the witch!

Hehe must be a Welsh D thing - mine is exactly the same and is also on a handful of cool mix and chaff!
