Can someone clear something up for me... Am I right in thinking that a true welsh cob can not be coloured? I always thought this, but was introduced to a new horse on the yard.. a piebald welsh cob(?) I know they relaxed the height restrictions, but have they done the same on the colouring or am I barking up the wrong tree??

My understanding is that a pure-bred Welch Cob can be any solid colour, so they cannot be piebald or skewbald.

I think it's more likely that it's part-bred - it can still be registered.

Was the horse tobiano (proper 'cow print' coloured) or a loud sabino? (Clydesdale type 'coloured' )

The tobiano gene doesn't exist in welshes (or any native breed other than shetlands) but sabino does. Usually sabino just gives raggedy white legs, white face and belly splash, but a maximally expressed sabino can give you an almost white horse. I heard the welsh societies have had a clamp down on overly-white animals but they do exist. Same as 'coloured' thoroughbreds and standardbreds.

No coloured in the sense of cow print ponies, but like Kallibear says you do often see excess white splashes on legs and tummy. But I believe this kind of colouring is now being discouraged, in the case of Welsh A's there are lots around that have too much white and can't be registered as pure breeds.

You're right- Welsh cobs can only be solid colours. I have a welsh x tb (grandsire is 7/8ths thoroughbred hence the colouring) who is registered as a Welsh part bred.

There are a lot of Welsh breeders trying to get more 'coloured' (with the tobiano or sabino or whatever genes) animals allowed, but as stated above, the rules clearly say 'no skewbald or piebald'

welsh breeders what sabino genes allowed, not tobiano e.g coloured welsh do not carry the tobiano gene so its not possable to get a coloured!!!!, they do carry sabino gene so why should a sabino not be reg?

no they cannot be coloured.....i think it was a bad day when the height restriction was relaxed as well, too many are being bred that are too tall and so far removed from the breed standard it's a shame.
