Welsh D owners..

Goyallt Nico is my boy, hes not your average pig headed welshie though. He has a super nature, takes everything in his stride, and is often used to lead the older horses past something they dont like. He will be 4 in May. I take him for walks on his own as well as in company and i havnt yet known him spook at anything. He walks over anything we care to take him over including plastic/wood.

Rhencullen Tywysog is now 6 years old, bought him at 2 in a very poor state and he's food orintated and just managed to get to 14hh and like most of the newer Welsh D his eyes as they say are on stalks, hates having his mane or tail done. Took 15 months to get him to except a bit in his mouth and to release it:(:(Does lunge very well, walk trot and canter on both reins and a little spooky when he spots something. But can anyone give some advice how to get him to trot when I'm on his back as the only pace he has is walk, not kidding, even when ridden out with my other horse who will trot off and he still will only walk.:o:o:o:o:o

My 3yr old Sec D is a complete dope. Favourite position is resting his nose on my boot, nodding off, while I rub his neck. Attention seeker and does anything for a cuddle. Learning very quickly though.
The sec D mare I recently lost was quite spooky but trusting. Definatley a one person horse.
I had another sec D mare for many years and she never put a hoof wrong, ever! 100% safe but bouncy, beautiful action and the most outstanding all-rounder.
Love them all to bits and without doubt my favourite breed.

I got my welshie two years ago and well....... I knew he was going to be a handful when I first saw him, he was rearing on the yard when I first went to view him, god knows why that didn't put me off, but something told me to buy him, so the person selling him said go and groom him and he will calm down, well this certainly did happen, he loves the attention and this is the reason for his rearing he just wanted some love. So I rode him, jumped him and my sharer at the time did the same, so I went to see a few other horses but nothing had character like him and I as just drawn to him, went back for a second look hacked him out and he was perfect, had 5 stage vetting and brought him home.

So here we are two years down the line and he is still the same, doesn't rear so much now just the odd occasion when there is a lot going on, he is a fantastic hack, will jump anything and isn't so bad on the flat, kicks the door down in the morning for food, is a very good doer, he recently broke my finger loading him but this is work in progress, he's 11 but has the head of a 5 year old sometimes. Everyone on the yard thinks he is full of character and makes everyone laugh with his ways but think they would miss him if he wasnt around.

So anyway, here's a quick piccy of him! He has the look of butter wouldnt melt! :D

so you reckon they need a special kind of owner?

i reckon you could be right
as a newcomer to this forum this is by far the most positive and well natured thread i've come across!

so we've all obviously been 'hoof picked' by our Ds

of course you're allowed to like connies too, so please come back out from behind that wall!!

re help with not trotting when ridden, a few thoughts

as i understand it (s)he's trotting and cantering happily on the lunge
you ride other horses without this problem so doesn't sound like a rider issue

so, (and you may well have already explored this), i'd be taking a v close look at the saddle (esp fit and tree)
and if that seems ok a back check seems in order

also does (s)he canter when ridden?
just that i find horses split strongly into 2 camps early in their riding career

my sec c type thinks trotting is highly over-rated but will happily canter whenever asked
whereas my sec b type took a year to 'get' cantering and would just trot super fast until we stopped and waited for him to catch up
(btw he def 'gets' it now - little bugger nipped round my old TB eventer on a hack the other day - latter not impressed as he was being V GOOD and keeping to an in hand canter) :)

NeverSayNever has it absolutely right. My Section D mare is the sweetest, and cleverest horse I've ever owned. She is intensely affectionate, always answers my call and comes cantering, is a pleasure to do and runs our little herd kindly and effortlessly. Her only faults are that she is very strong and forward (I have only one 'good' arm) and she also is very spooky. I wouldn't change her for the world though. She is a delightful opportunist round the stables and deeply curious about everything.

My one is a Section D, he is as stubborn as a mule! If he doesn't want to do something, he won't, at all. xD His grandparents and ancestors are all show horses, one of them being Ebbw Victor, he kind of looks like them in a way.
Danny was born on the mountains in the wild, though his passport says all his parents are Section D's. :3

I spent quite a bit on his white tack! xD

He did NOT want to get up that day, it took me over an hour to finally get the lazy thing up. xD

I recently got him hogged, as parts of his mane kept falling out due to the midges. D:

All the Welshies on here are adorable! <33
