just wondering what peoples opinions are of putting a welsh sec D mare to a TB jumping stallion? and what they will look like?

Depends which way round it is! There are some that are lovely, a more substantial TB, excellent horses. On the other hand there are some with Welsh tops and TB legs. Oops.

Bred a few out of my old section D mare - the TB stud was more than happy for her to be covered as she had a good wide pelvis, and she bred some cracking foals. They all made 15h + (she was only 14.1) and at least two went on to event. They all had nice natures as well.

I've seen some lovely ones, fabulous scope too, but I've also seen some god awful ones that were very highly strung.

If your mare has a good temperament and nice conformation and you choose a stallion carefully you should get something very nice!

Ours is the other way, 15.2 welsh D stallion vvv dark dun, 15.2 bay TB mare...

We got a beautiful pale palomino filly, now 3 years old, 16hh already, built like a brick outhouse with a leg at each corner but looks like a stunning cross, she is however the spawn of satan...

Beware!!!!

great cross - but often welshies aren't mugs rides so if you cross with a TB with a bad temp (and there are plenty of those around) then you could end up with a very capable horse that is definitely not 'anyones ride'

just be careful to match stallion and mare well (yeah - you always should but some of those stallys look so gorgeous our eyes overrule our brains)

Here's mine! Very forward-going, but so so so willing to try everything. 10000% bombproof to hack. Will jump anything and has got lovely paces once you've slowed them down! Oh, and she drives! Love her to pieces!

I think it's a great cross but I'm biased! Mine (the black one in my sig) is by a 14.2hh Welsh D stallion and out of a 15.2hh TB mare. She is only 14.2hh but she has a lovely temperament, is forward going and has a great jump. She's a fab allrounder and I love her!

Admittedly I am not particularly keen on her welsh D neck, she is very thick around the throatlash although not immediately obvious on these pictures. Had a friend that also had one but it was a total opposite so it would be hard to predict what the cross would looki like, i would say mine had tb legs and head whereas the other one I knew looked more like a cob.

Normally super fun, with a fab jump too

My friend has one by a welsh mare out of abergwiffy (sp?) he evented up to 2* and was the most wonderful junior horse, loved his jumping but not so great on the flat

ooh that sounds hopeful then
