On sunday am taking welsh D to his first party, the show i have chosen is low key, about 10 mins drive and mainly inhand showing classes :D we are doing the inhand welsh class and the driving type Although he is normally placid and calm, He can have his moments and be a bit, ahem wild :o this was mainly when he wasn't cut (cut back in Feb) and he was a bit of a ladies man  he was well known in the villiage for his 5th leg :D
Now he is 3 and stunning and beautiful and moves like a Dream (thats his name BTW, Dream :)) am a little concerned about taking him to his party. Am showing him in the inhand bridle and lead rein (with chain) pictured. Normaly i handle him in his halter (horsemanship kind) with a long 12ft rope and he has real respect for it and i feel really in control, but obviously this would look out of place so bridle it is!
I took him out for a walk tonight round the village and he was well on his toes, he looked lovely, head up, really walking out and snorting and looking at everything from wheelie bins to horse pooh :rolleyes:
He was a good boy and although at times he was very full of it he never gets strong or pulls away, but with the excitement of his first party he may just blow a fuse!
So any tips to keep him quiet and cool and stop me going arse over tit if he decides to take of like a kite :o:rolleyes::(::):D

I think you will find its perfectly acceptable to show a Sec D in a halter, although I doubt he would respect a white show halter. I love his bridle, its smart. Maybe you could have a 12' rope ready if he starts being silly, even if it means you lose the class at least he will get the experience and you will be safer.

Yes was going to take his halter and rope just in case anyway. Also thinking of taking him in his bridle under his leather headcollar when he travels, just incase he's full of it will be easier than having to worry about taking his head collar off
His bridle was an £12 cheapy from eBay, its nice though for the price :) the lead rein is extra long, that was 2nd hand of eBay too but is considerably better quality than the bridle, its english leather for a start :o

How exciting for you :D
His bridle looks smart, it suits him and you will have better control so I would go with that.
Get there early so any high jinx can be tampered down before the class. Remember he will be quiet and cool if you are, act as you would normally.
My SecD 4 yo comes off the trailer prancing about with his tail up over his back. Fine if your at a Welsh show but in a 'local' showing class, there often isn't the room. That said most judges will expect to see a Welsh D show themselves so be prepared to run, really run! Don't be afraid to keep running past the others in the line up on the inside if the judge is still watching, once they turn their back then stop as sometimes the rings just aren't big enough to get a good trot going.
A youngstock class might be a good idea as there is always a bit more leniancy for youngsters behaviour.
Good luck and if you enjoy it he will.... Keep Calm & Trot On :D
