Hi
I own i 5 year old Welsh D mare - i love her to bits!
Just wondered how many of us on here had then and what do you think of them in general? Mind is very strong minded, affectionate, cheeky, funny, greedy
grin.gif
and quite a fizz bomb! I want her to chill and hope she will with time!

I dont have one but have met quite a few in my time....every single one a character. I think you have summed up the breed very well with your discription.

I doubt she will chill though....

Hi! I have a Welsh D who I have had for 5 years and he has not changed one bit in personality and fizzyness in that time, other than becoming more trusting and loyal
smile.gif

Mine is strong minded, opinionated, stubborn, nosy, greedy and daft as a brush....he has me laughing in hysterics at times and other times gritting my teeth with frustration but I love him to bits and would not change him for the world!

I have one and he is typical of the breed apart from being a lightweight version and not the heavy Section D sort.
He tries hard, wants to please and learn, cheeky, greedy, brilliant jumper, reasonable on the flat (affiliated BD) and very genuine.

That sounds about right - very clever too. I've had mine for 11 years and he has calmed down a little bit, still doesn't really act his age though. I couldn't have asked for a more loyal friend. He loves to please but always has his own opinion on everything. I wouldn't change anything about him!

My 5 YO Sec D "Lennox" is a thug!
He is absolutley gorgeous, but if he can get something in his mouth to chew he will.
He can open the stable door and then let all of the other horses on the yard out, he can get out of the field, after having climbed into the water trough first, he lies down when he can't be bothered to work, empties the FULL wheelbarrow out when i have been poo picking, tips his water bucket over the poor unsuspecting person who walks past and generally causes havoc......he is so cheeky! but i wouldn't change him for the world. He is posibly the cleverest, most honest thing going and a constant source of frustration....ahem....i mean entertainment.
And yes, if it suits him on that particular day, he is fizzy, otherdays i have to drag him off the floor.......Typical Sec D mentality. "I will do what i want when i want and you will have to deal with it!"

Wow I thought I was reading about my boy Dylan then!! That described him perfectly although not been in the water trough yet!!! I wouldn't change him for the world either

I too have one. He acts like a teenager with an ASBO and everyone knows when he's about. He will tip wheelbarrows, water buckets, grooming kits or anything else over. He Nips me if I ignore him and dare to speak to someone else, which I am desperately trying to stop, but obviously by telling him off he gets what he wants.

He can be amazing to ride, but has the attention span of a fish and can always find something to distract him, but when he works he is fab. He loves hacking and would just march along for hours and hours, just enjoying life.

I love him and wouldn't change him for the world

I love my partbred D even though he is going through a bit of a 'Kevin' stage at the mo. LOL about the wheel barrow, he used to get into trouble at my last yard for that, I always keep and eye on him to stop him doing it.

Mine is out of aberconwy gwenifer by fronarth victor. she is 5 year old and i would not change anything about her i think she is fantastic.

i have a 22yr old by Maesmynach Flyer out of a mare who was by Llanarth Braint. He's the one in my signature. He's retired now after damaging his annular ligaments behind, but he was a complete star in his time - fabulous all-rounder with a huge talent for dressage getting to Medium despite only starting at 15, only halted by injury really. also had a wicked, huge jump on him.

I'm now looking for a new one and it's hard - I think all the decent ones have already been snapped up!

Never again!!!

I've got one that's out on loan...I love him to bits but I wouldn't have another. Far too opinionated and cunning! The people who have my boy adore him but he has them well and truly wrapped around his finger!

I put him out on loan because I wanted something that would do things on my terms, not when it wanted to....so I went and got a mare!?

I'm on my 3rd Welsh D.

First one I got when he was 7yrs. He was extremely cheeky and a proper thug. He was quite bloody minded and I found out that he'd been mistreated as a youngster. Don't know whether this was because of his cheek, or whether the mistreatment had caused it. Whichever, I always felt he'd been misunderstood. He was also aggressive and territorial which I started to realise a while after I'd bought him....had never had a horse like that before! We soon came to an understanding - and got along fine, but he wasn't cuddly or friendly really.

I've now got Rosie who I've had for 13yrs. She's the lightweight sort, is very sensitive and a bit nervy but stick any jump in front of her nose and she's over it! She's by Glantraeth Welsh Treasure and her Dam is Byrgym Pride (can't pronounce that!)
Sounds like she's different to most in that she's absolutely willing at all times. Never buggers about. Only thing that stops us is when she's scared of something.

We've done loads and have had the time of our lives. She's going to do one more year of Pre Novice Eventing and then might see how she feels after that.

New girl is rising 3yrs. Bought her from Stud last summer. She seems (and I hope!) much more laid back than Rosie, though a bit of a stress head when things don't go her way!
She's by Brynmelys Enchanter.

But, she's been quick to realise that she gets praised when she's good and told off when she's naughty, and seems keen to please, so that's half the battle.
She's got a lovely temperament too!

I love welsh D's!!!!

Opinionated, sharp, flashy, show off, strong minded, trouble maker, boss, lazy, boss, loving, boss, easily bored, destroyer of many things, thug, light as a feather, too big for his own boots, opinionated, loyal BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mines a 17year old sec D who I've had for 6 years. Never again! I love him to bits but its like riding a pony on testosterone with an ASBO. He's my first horse and certainly not a novice ride. Never listen to anyone who recommends them to a first timer!

He gets stroppy, spooky and downright annoyed when asked to work, trying all his tricks to get away with slacking. Then when you've all but given up he'll collect and give you a fantastically light ride, expecting a hug and polo afterwards!

He's not a brave ponio either, but because I'm a nervous rider, I sometimes inadvertantly put him in a position where he has to make the decisions. Not the best combination. So he does put up with alot from me.

He is such a sweetie on the ground, and will frequently throw buckets and brushes around, or just stand looking gormless with them in his mouth.

ultimately i agree with Naturally (though not always the Brilliant bit)!
