Im thinking of purchasing a welsh section d, does anyone have one? im a little unsure if i could be to big, im 5ft6 and just over 10 stone, could loose weight!! looking for something to do some riding club stuff on, cheers

i have a section d i had im when he was 3 and now he is 7. i'm 5ft6 myself and weigh about the same and mine carries me easily. he is 14.2 but you can get them bigger than that but because they are cobby thney carry the weight.

i apsolutly love them so defo have one!!!!!!!

xx

I have a 14.2 hh and although i am only 5'2'' i weight 11 1/2 stone (i have started weight watchers this week!!!) i used to worry that he couldnt carry me until he did a massive buck whilst going up a steep hill through excitement - he couldnt have done that if i was too heavy!!!

I think you'll be fine. I don't have any section Ds myself, but I weigh about 10 stone and a bit too, I'm 5'11 tall and I wouldn't have any qualms about riding one - and have ridden many of them in the past.

Although a different breed entirely, my main endurance horse is a 15'1hh Arab - and my height and weight certainly don't have a negative effect on him!

Merin is sec d x ish.... he is 15.1 and carries my 10 stone fine

I'm just over 10st and I ride 13.2 haffie occasionally and he didn't collapse under my great weight and I don't look massive on him but i'm only 5'4''!!! I think you'd be fine with a Sec D tbh, especially as I think they can be up to 15hh (but i might be worng on that).

I have a 14.3 Welsh d x arab so shes finer than a welsh d anbd although i'm petite my mum whose 5ft 9 and 12 stone rides and jumps her without any probs what so ever, you'll be fine!!

I have 2 sec d's, one is just short of 15.2 and the other a 3year old 14.2 they are both completely different the filly being quite slender and the gelding being absolutely huge they are good weight carriers although i wouldn't expect the young one to carry more than 10stone the larger will carry 13stone max.
You just got to get one they are absolutely fab - the gelding competes at dressage showing and working hunter all affiliated and never out of ribbons! There isn't a discipline he couldn't do same goes for most sec d's they are the most versatile pony/horse around!

I bred & owned welsh cobs for many years and can be certain that a Welsh D will carry your weight + 5stone more easily. These horses are powerfull, they should have good bone and a good slope of shoulder not to mention strong in the quarters. They can work all day long and will carry your weight no problem at all.

Good luck in your search, it's a pity you werent at the Builth Sales in October as there were some good ridden animals there at reasonable prices. Although there are many across the counties that you will find.

Do some research before you buy, look at the confirmation required ect & blood lines that promote quality. Look on the Welsh Pony & Cob Society site that will help you and it has many good links to studs and associations acoss the country. Good Luck in your search

Hello there, I am lucky enough to have a sec d to ride. Although I am only 5'3" and petite he would easily both carry weightwise and take up a much bigger person. I have even been told that 'there is a lot of horse for such a small person'!

In fact, I think he is probably one of the broadest horses I have ever ridden!

he is brilliant though! He shows in ridden classes and does dressage with me. He is quite a character and can be cheeky - in fact a real pony at heart! He turns his hand to most things and with his lovely shoulder and front gives a really safe feeling ride.

Go for it!

No problem - they should carry you easily and officially they don't have an upper height limit but mine's 15.0/15.1 ish and carries my friend who's over 11 stone easily and still bounces about with her (friend has an "electric ar*e" !!).
They're fab & will turn a hoof to pretty much anything.

I was thinking the same as you. I am 5"5, nearly 10 stone and have recently bought a 3 year old Welsh D X. He is currently 14h rising. By the sounds of what everyone is saying, we are good to go!

I have a welsh d x dales who is officially 14.3hh but has no whithers so rides/wears more like a 15.3hh - seriously she takes 6'6" rugs and full size everything. I am 5'4 and weigh 11 stone and she's fine with that. My friend whos 5'9 rides her and she looks fine on her too.

i have 2 welsh d's, both about 15.1hh, one built like a tank and carries 15stone no probs. other one is much finer, but carries me fine and i'm just over 12 stone.
