Hi All

Iv recently got my Welsh Section D back from loan after a year, and the feathers on his front legs has vanished, just a wisp of hair remains.

Has anyone seen this happen before? can weather conditions contribute? will they grow back through the winter? any miracle shampoo etc to help it grow?

thank you.

Are you sure the loaner didnt clip them off? I know weather does usually thin them during the summer months. Check for any creepy crawlies which may have caused hair loss or any irritants which could cause itching!

It's something with this year. No idea whether it's soil PH, or the humidty...who knows, but almost every cob has suffered this year with being bog burnt. Not creepy crawlies/mites/or other....just literally has vanished overnight. Never had a year as bad for it as this year. Even the cobs with feather which has never burnt off in the worst mud, has gone this year.

Please can someone explain how mud "burns" hair? What actually happens to it? What does a horse with bog burn look like? It's a confusing description that I've never understood and its bugging me! Thanks.

the hair doesnt actually get burnt ,its the weight of the wet mud in the feathers that actually cause the hair to break off.

It's not the mud this year though, that was my point. Even ones which have been kept in have had feather problems this year. Hairy who has been out all summer in a well draining non-muddy field, his feather around the fronts vanished overnight. It's an odd year. Even the breeders stock which never lose hair over the worst winter out normally, have just gone this year.

Are you sure its not bog burn? Mine got bog burnt, she now has about 3 strands of hair where her feathers should be! They will grow back,im hoping mine will by the time it gets muddy to give her bit of protection from mud fever!!

My cobs feather has gone alot this summer. It has been great all winter with all the mud they stayed nice and full and then this summer they have gone a bit. They were all down her feet and now i can see half her feet and her feather down her leg is alot thinner :(. Hope it grows back nicely over winter.

My Cob looks like he has had his feathers clipped, they are perfectly trimmed, but he has feather mites, so has trimmed them himself with his teeth!! Frost snaps hairs too! XX
