Went to view 2 Horses Yesterday, now after some Vet rec's in Aberdeen!

Had a brilliant day viewing the 2 horses and loved them both!! But after much careful consideration and a reality check from my instructor we have narrowed it down to one and I love her!!! I am sooooo excited!!! And a little bit in shock, as I never thought I would click with the first horse I went to view. But she was brilliant, exactly what I am after. We did some work in the school, popped over some jumps, went for a wander up the road next to field of youngsters going loopy and charging around, had a pheasant jump out at us, a tractor fully loaded with bales pull up next to us and my OH clomping up behind us with the camera and she behaved impeccably, only a slight spook and skip to the side with the pheasant. So now she just needs to pass my RI scrutiny and then the vets and then hopefully she will be all mine to give non-stop cuddles too :D

So, now I’m looking for any recommendations for a vet in Aberdeenshire to do a vetting. Ardene House was mentioned by the yard owner and was the vets used by my previous share’s owner. Does anyone have any experience of them or can anyone recommend any others?

All help much appreciated. Hopefully all going well, RI will come out to view Wed, Vet Thurs or Fri then pony home at the weekend!!

Oh also any tips on how to try and put off seller selling to someone else in the meantime?? I have told her that I am very keen and if RI likes her and the vetting doesn’t throw up anything untoward I would like to buy her. Not sure if there is anything else I can do to secure??

You need to leave a deposit subject to vet. Think of it from the sellers perspective, there is nothing to stop you changing your mind and she has lost the impetus. Also do keep in contact so she knows exactly where you are in terms of organising vetting etc.
 
Thanks LouS & Luci07. Can I leave a deposit subject to her passing the vetting? I asked if she thinks the mare would pass a 5 stage vetting and she said she thinks she would no probs. And how much of a deposit do you leave? We also never talked numbers at the viewing. I just asked about the tack and rugs and she said she would have a think about what she wants for it. The tack is nothing special and not in great condition and RI reckons we should get it thrown in for the price.

Eeeek, I'm useless at negotiating when it comes to money! I guess I should be discussing payment before putting a deposit down?
 
You need to make an offer subject to vetting and RI trying her, arrange both to be done ASAP, ideally by Friday. Deposit usually 10% of agreed price, refunded if failing vet, take it and the paperwork when your RI tries her.
The horse should then be off the market but move quickly if she is nice.
 
When you put down your deposit be sure to get a reciept which clearly states how much your deposit was and says 'subject to vetting'...good luck :D
 
Thanks all. I've book Ardene for Fri morning and my RI is coming out to see her Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately it's the earliest her schedule and the school availability didn't clash. The horse's current vet is Jim Dukes so thought best to go with Ardene. They will most likely end up being her vet if I take her home as well due to proximity.

Now, how do I concentrate on doing work until Thursday.... :D
 
Personally not a fan of Ardene or Dukes after past experiences of them - especially not Ardene (although only one vet there in particular...). They're also very expensive. It depends where the horse is in Aberdeenshire, I'd try searching for local vets who'll be cheaper and often just as good. I know of some but they might not be near to the horse.

Anyway, you should be buying MY horse!! He he.

Certainly agree with MM here. TBH, I come from SE England and the standard of vets in Aberdeenshire is miles away from what I would expect down there. However if it was for a 5 star vetting I'd probably go for Jim Dukes or Graham or Merve at Ardene. Bruce Bremner at Donview is also OK and apparently Douglas at Devron is too (but not in my experience). They just don't get the exposure to horses at the top levels up here and so there isn't the bank of experience available.
 
Hi Magicmelon, which vet in particular from Ardene was not so good? The one that they told me would come out was not mentioned in scarymare's post (Graham or Merve) and what have you got for sale? Where is it advertised? I may have missed it!!

Scarymare, Jim Dukes is her current vet so thought it was best to go somewhere else to get an unbiased view on her. Will have a look at the other 2 you mention and see if they are better priced. Ardene was pretty expensive!!
 
Oh, right sorry I missed that bit about Dukes in your post. I've only had one horse vetted since moving up here in 2000 (yikes) and it was Bruce Bremer I used. He was fine enough, really nice chap, he's a partner at Donview and does all their vettings. I wouldn't be recommending them for anything other than routine vaccs etc though as they are a mixed practice with some particularly inept girls who are terrified of horses!
