werid tail hair

Okay, we resuced a pony a few weeks ago and he has been clipped and feet done, went 16 weeks without being shod, he has sweet itch which on his body has been left and is now just coming right we bathed him for the first tile today and got right to the bottom of his matted tail but we found these what i can only discribe as plasticy hair that looks like the pines on a hedgehog and some of his tail hair has yellow scabs round the base. Im thinking the untreated sweet itch has tone infected....going to call vet tomorrow but was wondering if any of you had any ideas.

My mare has a small patch of VERY wiry hair on her tail, at the bottom to one side. Its, like you say, like plastic and doesn't look or feel real! She sometimes gets the occasional scab over/around the hair follicle of one of these huge thick hairs. So I will watch this thread with interest!
Me and my mum were only saying this morning how bizzare her tail hair is! When I finger comb it, amongst the normal hairs you can feel the odd thick tough hair, and I have to fight the urge to pull them out.
She does love a good bum/tail scratch, so I was wondering about sweet itch too (though she doesn't get it on her neck at all, and doesn't show any symptoms or rub her tail). x
