Hello there! I've been a along time lurker and a short time poster and I was wondering if I could pick your brains.

I've finaly got a horse of my own (well I'm a sharer but get to treat him as if he were my own, thanks to his lovely owner) and I am looking for some fun things to do with him this year.

He is rising 6, still quite green but very chilled out. He's a big hairy gypsy cob (16.3), schooling is coming along nicely and my instructor said I could get a nice test out of him. Teaching him to jump is next on my list and I am planning on taking him hunting this year (already beside myself with excitement at the thought of it!) but I was wondering if any of you had any ideas of any other local things I could take him too? I've never had my own before so it's still quite new to me and any suggestions would be welcome.

x

Hello! I'm a member of Harewood Combined Training Group and can recommend it! Lots of good price lessons with excellent instructors, in house dressage competitions plus opportunity to ride for teams and go on horsecamp to Somerford

Thank you, I will check it out. We are both still a bit green (me at anything other than riding school stuff, him in general) but he is so chilled out he is almost horizontal. I am hoping we wont make to much of a fool of ourselves!

I'm a member of Ackworth and District riding club, i haven't actually managed to get out to anything yet due to transport, but they are really nice and friendly and always have something going on!

I don't have any transport either so will have to hire a box and sweet talk my dad into towing it with his pickup. I will have alooksy at this one too thought and see what takes my fancy. Where abouts are you, was wondering if we could share transport costs maybe?

It rather depends on where you are based. There are three ridng clubs in the Huddersfield area, Pole Moor, Colne Valley and Holme Valley. They all have different emphasis and are maybe worth a look at. A lot of the comps are open to none members, but the entry fees will be more for none members.

He lives near temple newsam so near the motor way, but most of this is dependent on how far my dad is willing to take me TBH.

Thanks for all the suggestions though, it will give me something to aim at when the nights are lighter and I can get him a bit fitter.

I run a small riding club in Leeds (It's West Leeds though so you'd probably need transport from Harewood) called Low Moor Riding Club, we're based in a little village near Gildersome, Tong and Pudsey and we do everything from Dressage to Showing to SJ to fun days filled with mounted games and BBQ's :)

mounted games sound good! Does it matter that he is 16.3 and I am 28? Don't really mind making a fool of myself but perhaps not in front of flexiable kids on ponies! ;)

Well, Mine's 18.1hh and I'm 26, trust me I make more of a prat of myself than anyone else ever could but you know what, I have a laugh and if I can't laugh at myself, then I'm, a sad person indeed! Seriously, we're a friendly bunch, a far cry from 'Pawsh' but we do manage to keep things professional whilst still making sure everyone enjoys every minute of our events.

We've got a facebook group and soon will have a website too, FB Group is here http://www.facebook.com/groups/44641881067/10150598638286068/?ref=notif&notif_t=group_activity (I hope that works, I haven't linked anything on here before!).

Like others have said, there's a load of riding clubs, mostly well established, in West Yorks, Aire Valley, Upper Batley, Harewood, Horsforth, West Ardsley are all worth checking out too :)

There is also Nidd Valley RC and that's based in Leeds/Wetherby area so not bad for you if horse is at Temple Newsam. Harewood Combined and Nidd Valley are essentially covering the same are and i have been a member of both although am not currently. The only down side I found to Harewood combined (and I wasn't a member long so this may not be a fair account) is that it seemed many of their training sessions were mid week which, for someone who works office hours isn't exactly ideal.
