I am looking for a western bridle, the one where it goes over one ear. my other problem is it will have to be on the big side to fit my horse who takes an english xfull bridle.

I believe it might help with his head shyness when putting the bridle on.

can ayone help me ??

I got my draft horse size western bridle from Trekkers in Leyburn. http://trekkerswestern.co.uk/ It is the same as extra full english.

You will find that most western bridles are too small as they tend to come in 1 size 'horse' which I find is about the same as a cob-full english bridle.

I notice some do not have throat latch, does it mater, what are the downsides of not having one ????

I also assume that you can use the bridles with normal snaffles bits, silly question really !!

do you think it will help with head shyness when tacking up, he is fine until the bridle goes to his ears
 
It is not on their site, it was from the shop. They have so many different sorts that they don't list them all.

Mine is a fairly plain 1 ear headstall, dark brown with fancy stitching.
 
Could the head shy stuff be because her extra full head has been made to wear a full size bridle in the past and it has pinched her ears? You have taken the trouble to make sure the bridle fits correctly, but a previous owner might not have been so conciderate

I bought a horse with an extra full size head, he came with tack and the bridle was full with a 6 inch bit. He needed a XF bridle and a 7" bit. He had head issues!
 
probably is the case. like you he was in a normal full bridle, 5 1/2 inch bit and a saddle that did not fit !!!

I have had him 2 years now, his standard bridle sie is now xtra full, I also dont use a nose band a) he did not need it and b) it made the bridle tighter on him, his average bit size is actually 6 inch !! with 6 1/2 waterfor (but now back to plain snaffle), he now has saddle that does not bruise his shoulders and he can move in.

just trying to make him as comfy as poss, especially when i do ong hacks of over 2 hours. he is still funny with being bridlesd
 
What about a bridle with clip cheeks that you can undo one side, put the bit in his mouth and then do up again? Stephens do them as half "work bridles" , or cotswold sport on here.
 
I don't use throat lashes on my bridles because I want them to be quick and easy to put on and take off. The downsides are that they come off easily; but that is an upside from my perspective.
