I have a pair of leather split western reins that i want to turn into normal English reins.

Any tips or ideas?

I have a few ideas of my own but would welcome some more.

Probably simplest for a saddler to sew the ends together; that said, you will want them to be shorter than they are as split reins; if they are weighted reins (ie thicker toward the bit end, and down along the tails, narrower where your hand is) they might not be so simple to join together so that they are a uniform thickness. Take to your local saddler, see what they think.

thanks for the tips. One of the other liveries works for Albion as a saddle maker so i will ask her is she can take them to work and see what can be done. :D

i had some beautiful leather western reins that i loved using but after i lost my mare i couldn't use the western tack with my new one so i was a bit upset but i decided to mix it up a bit and still used the western reins with an english saddle, it looked odd at times but i was happier riding in them.

it seems a shame that you are thinking of making the reins into english ones, especially as there are few western equipment stores in the uk. why not sell on them instead? i'm sure there are lots of people, including me who would be interested in them.
