So I'm off on an American adventure for six months - I've never ridden western at all but I'm keen to give it a go and experience the lifestyle. I'll be working on a guest ranch for a while, so I have to "look the part". I'm pretty sure they provide a staff shirt though.
Forgive me for my naivety- but what do you guys wear to ride in? I've never found jeans very comfy to ride in, so do you get a particular brand without the inside leg seam? Where can I get this kind of thing in the UK?
The only company I've found is wrangler and I'm not looking to spend very much! If you know of anyone selling a couple of old pairs that's do me just fine! (Size 8-10).
Aside from that I think I'm sorted!

Wait till you get there

Normally western jeans are designed to be longer when you ride and they still cover your boots but feel longer when not on a horse.. Don't get them in the UK. I brought Wranglers ones in the USA stretchy and fit and are comfortable and designed to be ridden in not like the uk ones.

Look on ebay for some otherwise

I second waiting until you're there, but if you want to have look at stuff then www.sheplers.com is a good place to start... :)

In this country, classic equine sometimes have riding trousers in stock and they're reasonably priced, although I've not bought any as I tend to ride in my ordinary bootcut jeans with cowboy boots. (I have bought western tack from there though and the service is excellent).

Wrangler Q Baby Ultimate Riding Jeans are very good but buy when you get there. I also recommend Ariat Fat or Pro Baby boots as they are cowboy boots (which you will need to wear with jeans to be comfy in a western saddle) but they are not old fashioned in their look. Also buy them out there. You will need a western hat but buy locally as different areas of the US have different styles and you might look like you don't belong in the 'wrong' hat. A 'wild rag' or neckerchief looks nice for a woman inside the neck of a shirt. Oh, and a belt - get that there. Boy, am I jealous, have fun.

Woooooooo, enjoy yourself, what an opportunity :) Where (state) are you going? I hope it is a warmer one if you are leaving soon ;)

I ride in normal jeans all the time, all the saddlery stores will have them (usually with a higher waist) Western saddles have fenders, no stirrup leathers to pinch ;) I ride in western and Colombian saddles and never have any problem with seams. I love Fat baby boots too. Go with workmanlike rather than trendy though, normal 'flat' riding heels and round toes rather than heels and pointy toes, my current boots actually do have heels, they are very comfy but not so practical for walking about in. Cowboy boots are so pretty but they are worn UNDER pants ( = trousers, get used to saying pants ;) halters are headcollars, rugs are blankets - not that ranch horses wear blankets ;) )

Oh you'll have fun with the terminology :) I have been here years and still come out with things that have people going "What? Just what?"

Very jealous, I would have loved to have done something like that if I had had the opportunity :) We will expect updates and photos :)

Thanks guys, some great suggestions! It's in Arizona, so it should still be quite warm through the winter months! I have some Ariat boots that I ride in here that I was going to take- not black leather ones, they're very casual, brown suede type material (I've completely forgotten what type). If they're not okay I'll get some more out there but at least I know they're comfy!
