Following my move to North West Wales last year, I have finally had the arena surface redone & am now ready to start looking for a new instructor.

As I now ride mainly western it makes more sense to get a western instructor! The problem is, the closest one I can find on the WES site is Scherie Dermody who is based in South Cheshire, which is quite a distance from me.

Does anyone have any experience of Scherie? Is there anyone else closer to Caernarfon who you recommend for lessons? Is there a big western scene in this area, I'm guessing not as we don't even seem to be covered by a WES area, or am I missing something?

Perhaps i'll have to dust off my english saddle:-0

Scherie is excellent and does do clinics all over the country so you might find something in Wales.

Best thing to do is to go onto the WES website and click area info - WES area 6 (Wales) has an excellent website. They are a really friendly bunch too.
Sorry my knowledge of Welsh geography is rubbish but there does seem to be quite a lot of western activity in the Borders area... good luck :)

Thanks for the response Ironhorse.

I have checked WES area 6. I think we are closer to area 2, but even that seems to stop short of Gwynedd. We are kind of below Anglesea, almost as far north & west as you can go in mainland Wales without getting your feet wet!

TBH, I'd ring Scherie, she will be able to tell you a lot more I should think. She is great, friendly and fun, brilliant with her horses, I'm sure she'd be glad to help you find what/who you need.

Sorry to bump this, but I just wondered if anyone else had any useful information for me.

Thanks in advance.
sherie is briliant I think she would travel down there but would obviously need to charge traveling time ,we have clinics for area two at wrexham and norhop hall ag college from time to time there was one at reaseheath college last weekend , hope to see you at some shows, we all have to travela fair bit for western esp AQHA stuff ..it would be nice if the were more western trainers/instuctors but hey ho...

Thanks Guys.

Yes, there should definitely be more western instructors - we live in hope!

I'll give Scherie a ring & see if I can sort something out with her.

I had a few lessons with Bruce Lawrence when I lived in Herefordshire, but it's certainly too far to travel to Malvern on a regular basis. I wish I had done more while I had the opportunity, but I was still very much into my english lessons then - such a shame as compared to now, Lawrence was on my door step. Never mind.

All levels are welcome, we try to have the sessions in small groups of similar levels/ability so that everyone gets the most out of it that they can. If you or your horse are very new to western I do a sort of warm up clinic on the Friday morning to prepare horses/riders for Bob. Please note that hard hats are compulsory for the clinic. Numbers are limited, so please let me know via pm of your email address so that you can get booked in.

The clinic venue also has direct access to the Cambrian Mountains, so if you fancy a trundle round the mountains in between sessions you are most welcome to. You will also be pleased to hear that the venue also has an indoor school, pretty essential in Wales !! There is also a really nice pub nearby that does excellent food.

No , Bob will teach anyone LOL!(even me!)
Seriously you'll find it really helpful and won't be out of your depth.
Tregaron is a challenging place to get to but Nigel and Sheila will make you very welcome.
Use any persuasion necessary on your OH, you'll have a lovely time!
