For the third time this week I have scraped a filthy, sopping wet rug off my TB (he likes to roll in muddy gateways!). Does anyone have any foolproof tips for hanging them up to dry without getting covered in c*&p. I do have a spare for tomorrow so it can hang for a couple of days but I always seem to come home covered in mud, am currently trying to throw it over a washing line hung up in tack store. Daft question I know but one of those things that really bugs me about winter

I leave mine over stable doors. The only way you are going to stay mud free is to get someone else to do it for you!! Aaah the joys of winter.

If my boy has rolled and is covered in mud (luckily not a regular occurance) I hose the mud off the rug whilst he is wearing it, and then dry it, still on him, with a towel. Then I will either take it off and hang it up, or leave it on him to dry off completely.
I know what you mean about getting covered in mud, and hosing it off is the only way I can think of to avoid that.

If they were wet and muddy I'd leave them on! I don't have spares, and fortunately no mud either, as yet.

If it was wet inside, I'd hose it down, hang it up and write it off for a week or two until it dried.

I am planning to invent equine stabilisers, so they can't get down to roll/lie.

Have you planned what you'll do with your fortune?

I used to hang bailing twine from my tack room roof and tie my rug up by the 'D's that you fasten your leg strap/filet string too.
These days my horse wears breathable t/o rugs 24/7, took a bit of getting used too as loved him in his clean cosy stable rug but no more wet rugs as they dry on the horse.

I leave wet muddy rugs on - they dry far better that way and the horses are always totally dry underneath. My TB likes to wallow - can't call it rolling it is far too seep for that. and he is far better left in the rug. It means he is snug and warmn and dry and his rug doesn't get disgusting and wet overnight hangiing up. I have got a rug dryer - but to be honest leaving them on works far better

Loving the stabilisers idea, genius! Looks like we are all pretty much in the same boat then, did I read somewhere that mud is good for the complexion? Roll on spring, I say

I do exactly the same. They dry much faster on the horse than off and so long as they don't leak the horse is still lovely and snug underneath. Same TO rug stays on 24/7

Overalls! Last winter I bought some for about £20. Not very flattering, but have now got into the habit of putting them on as soon as I get to the yard, as I was fed up of always going home filthy. Our rugs are hung up in the tack room on one of those wall fitted hinged racks, and a small heater put near them and they're always dry in the morning.

If they get really wet and muddy I dry them overnight in my kitchen by the rayburn hanging over chairs.

I have a very tolerant OH. The house smells nice and horsey in the morning.

Oh my god, I thought my husband was good. Think I'd end up in the divorce court for that one

If rug is really filthy I also hose it off on the horse & then leave it on him to dry. I've only had to do this a couple of times, but he lives in his turnout 24/7, ie in stable too.

Lift them, then leave them on. They are dry on the inside (should be!). The mud cracks off a bit as he lays in his stable, but he's only going to put it back on again tomorrow.

I've taken a yard brush to my girls rug while she was still wearing it when she rolled in super sticky wet mud. I got the excess of then hose it (again while she was still wearing it) then left her in it for the night. She doesn't roll at the gate to regularly but when she does she is actually dripping in mud, filthy mare!

To get it off the horse and over the rail at the back of my stable to dry, as i am taking it off i fold it from the front to the back so i end up carrying it with the inside (clean bit) next to me then put it over the rail and open it up (i stay clean and the rug gets dried).

Works for me.
