I put mine spread out over the back wall or the spare stable dries out rally well over night alhough i have 2 turnout rugs which i alternate when the other gets wet!
I leave mine hanging over the stable. Actually I left the last one over the field gate, but it was about a month before there was a sunny day to dry it! I don't blame your OH, wet rugs stink!
We have a few handy walls to hang ours over at the yard, or drape them over hay bales etc. By far the best way is to leave them on the horse as long as possible though! Most of us have Fals too which helps as they dry really well when on the horse. I took my Fal to a show on Sunday and it got drenched through (horsey snug and warm but rug was sopping and weighed a ton!), it's been hung on the feed room door for a day and a half and didn't get any drier, she had to go out in it this morning and it was dry in two hours on her!
I do envy my YO though, she has her own large tack room with a heater and big rug rack to dry things on! Wish she'd share!
I hang mine by the front buckles up on the top door of an empty stabel each. And some same again on the swingy rug rack. Regardless of weather they are generally dry in the morning.
Ive just made some rug rails to hang in my horses stables - works a treat. cost me £12 for 3.
Just bought 3 8ft fence stakes - chopped the pointed end off then drilled holes in each end then hung them from the eaves of the stable - keeps them out of the way of the horses but warm enough to dry them out completely.
Unfortunatley its a little bit short for my 7ft combos but the majority of the rug is dry and thats the main thing.
If the rug is a wet turnout and the inside is still dry and the horse is warm the turnout gets left on. VWALLAR in the morning the rug is bone dry and the horsey is still happy

Same here - i leave the rugs on as long as they are dry inside which they usually are
If your horses are at home,...this is what we did.
Our central heating boiler is in a room beside one of the stables (about 12 x 8 ft). We put up one of the three arm rug racks quite close to the boiler on the same wall, although not as good as a proper rug drier, it is a lot better than hanging them up without any heat.
BTW - Totally agree that rugs dry quickest when left on horse as long as the inside is still dry. After really torrential rain a couple of weeks ago, I changed 2 of my horses rugs and they took ages to dry hanging up
We have a rug drying room at our yard with loads of rotating heaters and racks on the walls - its brill, rug always warm and dry by morning but you have to hold your nose when you go in there cos it really stinks.
Please don't laugh but I dry rugs in my green house! Generally they are left on horse to dry, but if I have washed one or changed a very wet one into the green house it goes. We don't grow anything in it any more so have lots of frames in it to hang rugs. If there is sunshine at all they are dried superfast! Sometimes I also dry them on the centre partition of the trailer..
Never thought of the greenhouse! I do leave them on as long as poss but take off when he comes in at night, it just seems to be the top of the neck that gets a bit wet on the inside
I moved on a yard were they keep the same rug on for turnout and stable. Im a rug queen and hated the idea of my boy having a dirty wet rug on in the stable but its fantastic. As long as they are breathable and fit well you never have wet rugs in the morning, no more stable stains where they lie in pee and half the cleaning costs. The rugs especially the modern Rambo, Fal, Weatherbeeta dry quicker than you'd think whilst on the horse.
Ditto above - I use super cosy turnouts so no need to change them.
However for under rugs, travel boots etc we have an electric towel rail I put in the utility - doesn't stop the smell, but speeds up the drying process!
This is a free standing plug in one, but I don't like to leave in our barn as I'd rather keep an eye on it.
I just have rug rails I hang them on although it does take them a while to dry in the chilly rug room. But mine live out 24/7 so the only time I really change their rugs is if they have got so wet, its soaking right through (obviously I take them off every day to ride etc.).
I have two hooks up in my spare stable and hang the wet one up by the leg strap loops and have a spare rug to put on while the wet one dries! Works a treat for me.
I am not supprised the OH is complaining of the smell in the kitchen though...I would not get my rugs through the front door never mind into the kitchen!!!!
That is what I used to do before changing yards. I tied two lengths of bailing twine from the rafters and tied my rugs up from the leg strap d's on the rug. Could be a bit messy getting muddy rug up but they dried better than thrown over a partition.
The yard I moved on to this year leave wet rugs on and though I had always changed mine I am now a convert - it's great. They dry a lot faster and pony is showing no ill-effects so I am very happy with this method.
I use rambo's which are breathable. They are used for day and night and when wet, stay on, they dry wonderfully and I have done this for the last few years.
Just out of interest, what do you guys do if you want to ride? Do you change the rug or do you put the wet rug back on after you have ridden? I also like to give my lad a groom when I bring him in, ridden or not, just so I can check him over for any lumps and bumps. How do you get round this?
Wet rug and riding situation hasn't happened yet so don't know! I don't think the groom takes them off when they come in wet at night so they can't be checked properly but they are taken off in the morning and groomed before being put back on again.
Worrying now incase something is missed at night...
