I recently imported a TB mare from Turkey. She has a Turkish Passport which has her full breeding on it and a government stamped picture of her as a foal(seriously cute!), I also have a seperate government pasport with a more up to date picture of her, also stamped with a full description and drawings etc.

I have all documentation pertaining to her importation, stamped etc by vets and officials.

Here's where it gets tricky!!!!

Wetherbys have confirmed she's in the stud book, along with all her ancestors but because Turkey don't use a recognised passport they won't issue her with a Wetherbys passport!!! (Or maybe they're not very sure what to do having never had a TB imported from Turkey before!!)

I may wish to breed from her in the furute (or maybe not!) and I want to compete in racehorse to riding horse classes so Wetherbys passport is needed.

What can I do??????

P.S. Here's her link

I think all they would have to do is stamp it with a change of ownership, think it's £35 now) as they would any TB that's changed hands. They certainly shouldn't issue you with a new one as she already has one. As long as Weatherbys recognise her, then you shouldn't need a Weatherbys passport just so you can do R to R classes as they are show classes, nothing to do with them and she has the relevant paperwork.
That's my take on it anyway. You could ask SN, she's always doing paperwork for import/export of TBs.

Thanks for that. She doesn't have a Wetherbys passport just her Turkish ones.

She needs to be registered with an ex racers club before competing and for that she I think she needs a Wetherbys passport.

It's all very confusing!!!!

I'll maybe ask SN, thanks for the info.

Winging it here a bit but all you need to produce are her race records or proof from the Turkish racing authority that she has been in training. All the passport is is a record of identity, Weatherbys issue them for the UK but each country has their own TB authority that administers the racing, breeding and passport records for their own TB horses, in the USA it is the Jockey Club, as racing is worldwide each country recognises the other authorities in other counrties.

In short you should not need a passport from weatherbys.

If you want to breed you will have to enter her in the UK breeding stock register as a broodmare, this involves taking blood for a DNA profile and costs I think about £60-80(havent done it for a while). You would need to send in her Turkish papers.

All in all it should be no different than if she had been bred and raced in the USA.

As long as the Turkish jockey club, or what ever it is called, is recognised as a TB stud book (Like the JC is in the US) then there shouldn't be a problem breeding from her in the future, as she has a passport already. As KarynK says

I can't add to the advise given already I am afraid. Unfortunately it is lunchtime and I am out of the office all afternoon (weather permitting), but I need to call Weatherbys anyway and actually need to talk to some in exports and imports, so I'll see what I can find out when I ring....

Thanks for that.

I've kind of given up really.

The only other thing I can think of is to get in touch with the export agent I used. He was instrumental in bringing in the new Turkish Government passports 3 years ago and was also an agent for Tattersalls so I think he knows what he's doing!!!

The fact remains that she still needs a UK passport though and I wanted to keep her TB integrity!

Had a thought re passport you will probably not need a UK one but may need to get weatherbys to add a few pages to the Turkish one if it does not comply fully with EU rullings, it probably only needs the pages for the listing of the drugs used added if that page is not already in there.

When I imported from the USA I had 30 days to get an EU passport, so I am assuming that since an agent was involved for your mare that your passport complies? I would check with him.

Problem is that Turkey is not in the EU yet so not that simple unfortuantely.

Turkish Jockey Club is recognised world wide as a TB stud which is why Weatherbys can find her in the Stud Book.

Have since done more research myself and it would appear that I had to have documentation stamped in Turkey that I didn't get stamped. Arrgghhh!!!

Possible, I think, to take it back to Turkey and get it stamped, but is it worth it????????

Ahhh yes, well in that case that would be down to whoever exported her from Turkey!! Her passport will need endorsing from the Turkish authorities. This can be done now, even though she has left. I've had to get it done for a weanling that was born in Ireland, exported to Germany and then came to the UK, but Weatherbys still thought it was in Ireland as it hadn't been exported to Germany from there!! I did speak to Weatherbys ealrier, but was unable to get much info for you, not knowing the full details. But if her passport needs endorsing for permanent export to the UK, then that should be failrly simple to sort out tbh - though it may take MONTHS!! Be sure you photocopy EVERY page of her passport before you post it off - I don't let any of mine out my sight without doing so!

Thanks SN I think I might have an idea what I need to do, question is now, is it worth it?????

It's possibly going to cost me about £300 to get this paperwork taken care of and I could just get her a normal passport and trust that the ex racers club can find her when they do a search!!!

Why is nothing in life simple?????

Why did I bring this mare all the way from Turkey?????

Bloody horses!!!!!!!
