I hope they're more understanding than SportHorse (GB). When I bought Poppy a few weeks ago it was £20 to re-register her in my name and it would have been about another £60, I think, to change her name - if they'd let me!
They now insist that horses stay registered in the original name on the passport (so in Poppy's case her stable name) - so your new one may forever be "Unrecorded"!
A lot depends on wether it is just a wetherbys passport that was brought in under the new passport rules or a full passport ie GSB or NTR .The latter will have breeding details included and will cost over £100 to register a name the unrecorded only means that the horse has not been named for racing.
If it is a identification passport ie no breeding details it should be a lot cheaper.
Just a word of warning to people wanting to register BE if you buy a thouroughbred that has been named on its passport and it has raced (only once) that name cannot be changed at any cost,so if you dont llike the name dont buy the horse.

You can ADD a competition name to the passport at no extra cost, when you send it in for change of ownership with SHB(GB). At least that is what I did with my mare when I bought her nearly 4 1/2 years ago.
I would ring them, I remember finding it somewhere and think it was about £17, although I could be wrong. They were very helpful when I rang them about a TB passport and changed the ownership on a non TB one very quickly.
If you pm me your email address I can send you the naming card for Wetherbys. Wetherbys can also check the name(s) you want to use before you submit the form. It costs £110.65 and takes two working days for the name to be registered, just return the completed card with horses passport.
Horse has to be in your name first I think. I also have the Change of Ownership form if you want that sent over. It's £11.50 and takes 28 days or you can pay £44 (I think) for the express two day option. I can also send you the contact email addresses at Wetherbys for the peeps that deal with C of O and naming if that's any use?
Just been through all this with one of mine!
ETA I had the same problems with SHS (GB) so horse is stuck with stable name in that passport
OMG!! £110?!?! Another hidden charge!! Surely the horse would need a name to be registered to be able to be affiliated with anyone?!?! SO as a result I would have to pay for that?! Grrrr!!!!! But thank you for the info

Last I heard, if it's 'unrecorded' in the passport, then to register for affiliated competition, you can choose what you want to register it as (as long as it is allowed by discipline) then let Weatherbys know who usually write in it 'registered as ????? with BE/ whatever. That's what was written on Twiggy's anyway.
As SN says, they are really helpful if you ring but if you have a name(s) in mind, they will check it's available (doesn't clash with anything already registered fully with them)
Riding club rules state you must compete with the name on the passport, my friend had loads of problems at our recent HT as no name, however they let her go in the end as long as she gets in on before next comp / Championships. However she is BD registered and they dont have a problem

It is £110 for a TB passport but a lot less for a non TB passport. For a TB passport I think there are some exemptions with BE, so I'd contact them if that is the case.
With BE if the horse has no name registered, then you ring BE explaining you dont want to pay the £110 to add a name and just put what you want it to be called and they do it as that.

Yep, this is what I did, mine has just been added in biro on his passport as he had nothing in the space at all.

Not anymore unfortunately - it's the name on the passport only. You can request a name change BUT you have to have confirmation in writing from the breeder and all former owners that they are happy for you to do this, then it goes in front of the SHB(GB) panel for consideration. I'm told on good authority they allow very few changes.

But I haven't changed her name! They wouldn't let me and I'm glad! It's difficult enough for breeders to keep track of their horses when the disciplines do not insist on the horse competing under the passported name! Which as a breed society I am really very glad that they do not allow name changes without such rigmarole, esp. as the 2 I have bred are registered SHB(GB).
I ADDED a name and I have used her PASSPORTED name as her breeding name when registering her foals. However, I will most likely compete her under the name I added when we are out and about in years to come - though I am undecided on this front, as her passported name has actually grown on me since purchasing her.
Oh sorry see what you mean now. Poppy's breeding papers are included in her passport - so it's 'Poppy XVIII' all the way unfortunately....
I only wanted to add 'Primitive' to reflect her breeding!
I spoke to the Secretary at SHB(GB) and she said they did allow names to be added where they differed for competition purposes but only where the horse had already been registered with, for example, BE, BD, BSJA, etc. All new registrations, as you know, must be the same as the passport and breeding papers - so no more 'dual-named' horses.
Smartie has a Weatherby's NTR passport (and the rules may differ slightly from the TB register as you're not registering a potential race name as these are very tightly controlled - eg. no I/II/XVII as you can have in general competing).
Unfortunately she was never named either but her previous owner has written the name in in biro. BE had no problem with this. They only wanted a photocopy of the front page of the passport and of her breeding details.
My main annoyance is that though she's out of a Ballinvella mare this isn't recorded in her passport as Ballinvella wasn't Weatherbys NTR registered so isn't recognised by them
. I have a copy of her dam's pedigree to prove it, but without this it wouldn't be proveable.
Oh, and the only requirement in the passport is to fill in yourself any change of owner/trainer etc. The instructions in mine say expressly that you do this yourself and don't have to send it in. Unexpected, but cheap.
