Can anyone recommend a good weymouth bit for a horse with a small mouth and big tongue? We have been using a NS Gently Sloping Forward Ported bit but would like something that offers maybe more tongue relief and takes up less space in his mouth. He's been going in a double for a while now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

May be worth seeing if any of the bit banks have one - think it was about £120

I tried one my trainer at the time had lying about first!

That's what I was thinking, i've just been searching the net for some bitbanks. I did get a shock when I saw the price but it may be worth a go if it does a better job than the NS. I may see if my trainer has one "lying about"...i doubt it though at that price

Hi,

Mister was put in a double for the first time on Sat... I too am looking for more of a "tongue" relief for him as he has a big fat tongue!!!!! Have you spoken to Heather at NS..I hope to speak to her tomorrow, I saw there is a weymouth sloping forward but also narrow in mouthpiece too? if the tongue is thick I believe this is not severe because it just facilitates for room in the mouth etc..and if fixed mouthpiece does not move too much and only comes into play when actually used and necessary? Will hopefully let you know what I find out. ALternatively watch e-bay for cheap KK bits!!

Before you spend a fortune Shires do a weymouth set that is a nice narrow mouthpiece which has generous tongue relief without being heavy or clumpy. It comes with an eggbutt bridoon (which is as much use as a chocolate fireguard for most horses!) but as the set is only about £38 you could afford to buy the bridoon you need separately. It is a stainless steel set hence much cheaper but they are super quality bits. My warmblood goes far better in it than anything else because he has a thick tongue and very little room between tongue and roof of mouth. I am fairly sure it is manufactured by Shires .If you have problem finding them ring Sydney Free Saddlers in Cirencester,Gloucestershire and describe it.They will know what type of weymouth you mean as I have sent several other people to get them from there and they usually have them in stock.I think they do bit hire as well so you can try them out.I will try to find a link.
