I appreciate this has probably been a topic of conversation numerous times and i appologise but i cant be doing with trauling through the tonne of threads to find one! ;)

We are planning to buy a 4x4 during the first part of next year and i wondered what peoples preferences and recommendations were?

Said vehicle will primarily be used as an everyday runner, to pull a track car and trailer plus an Ifor Williams 505 or 506 (whichever i buy) with 2 horses so it will need to be 'up for the job'!

Forgive me but i dont want to hear about all the legal requirements and weight limits as i am fully aware of the rules!!

I just want to know what people have got and why?

My first choice was a Disco TD5 but i am hearing alot of negative feedback so i wanted some different opinions and recomendations :)

Thanks

Depends on budget, personally I'd buy a G63 AMG but I haven't got that sort of cash spare, perhaps you have.

What I actually run is an elderly ex-Electricity Board Defender 110 Tdi.

I have just sold my gorgeous Discovery 3 that I used once in a blue moon to pull my trailer. It was just sitting there depreciating but was a fab car, so I have replaced it with a much cheaper Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD. Will pull 3.5T easily as well as the Discovery and is nice to drive out and about. I always choose an automatic and the advantage of this is that it is standard spec. Also really good off road with low ratio setting. You might be pleasantly surprised by the Jeep! :)

Over 50 members have rated their vehicles (mainly 4X4s) and trailers in a link in my signature below so that might help decide

I borrow a Nissan terrano & its fab!

The OH failed (again) to mend the disco today so I am currently car shopping. I have a similar budget & can only really find 52/53 terranos or old shoguns which I also won't touch!

Mitsubishi Shogun Sport Warrior, bought because I went shopping for a second hand Sorento, sat in one and didn't like it, wandered around a second hand 4x4 dealership a bit disconsolately and bought it on a whim. Absolutely love it :D

I bought a isuzu trooper in october as a tower and everyday run aroun I LOVE IT!! I thought id hate somethingnso big and EVERYONE groaned that fuel would cost alot IT DOESNT cost anymore than my little freelander as it stays in tickover mode most of the time. I tow 2 horses sometimes but mostly 1 and its FAB.

Another trooper vote here, only had ours a month and its been excellent. Its a 3.1 LWB auto and tows 2 easily. Like above poster said we were warned they drink juice but aprt from when towing, it really isn't that bad. I totally love it.

Disco - Barge pole..!!

I did a heap of on line research before buying our 4x4

Best that came up for owner reviews and least amount if known faults was the L200 so that's what we got and its been brilliant.

We were warned off by a friend who works for 4x4 garage repairing them - disco worst followed by Kia sorento, said they full of faults.

Mitsubishi Delica, tows really well, it's got 8 seats and it's no wider than a car. The rear seats fold up so you've got a huge tack room, also the bench seat swivels and lays flat, great for a kip.
