I currently have a Kia Sorento but it's not been very reliable lately (not quite 2 years old). Hoping to get a new 4x4 in the next year (before the Kia's warranty runs out!!) so what should I get?

I need to tow 2 16hh horses so a minimum towing weight of 2500kg is essential. Would prefer 3000kg though.

We have a LWB Shogun DID and it tows 2 x 16.3hh M/W horses in a 510 Ifor Williams up seriously steep hills unbelievably well.

I have a LWB Pajero 2.8 turbo diesel, basically an imported Shogun. It tows extremely well but as with many big 4x4s they are quite thirsty on diesel.

As you have a 2 year old 4x4 you will be aware of the increase road fund licence that the government has put on the newer 4x4s. They have also made plans to give another massive increase in the future. All these duty increases are aimed at the post 2001 registered cars. If you are only going to use the 4x4 to tow with & not use it for general driving then I would advise buying a pre 2001 car, you'll save a fortune on excise duty.

Isuzu troopers are the best ! They are not fancy 4 x 4.s but good solid workhorses. I have had mine for 6 years. It has never let me down and has a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes. Mine is the 3.1 TD RS (The vauxhall Monteray version )

I have a Jeep Cherokee, it manages a 511 with a 792 kg beastie and is still hungry for more!

It is more like a tractor, its a working vehicle.

Land Rover Defender............ born for it

Yeah i have considered getting an old land rover so I don't have to pay road tax at all! I still have a dog to take around though & would prefer to tow with something reliable.

The CO2 emissions are being divided more accurately next year so the really big (3 litre) 4x4's are extortionate in road tax!! The Sorento fairs quite well in towing capacity v CO2 but I'm losing faith in it. Have had lots of small things wrong & this time the small thing (speedo not steady) is a 1k warranty job. Just a bit worrying...

How reliable has your Pajero been?

Given that it's just a Disco with a shortened chassis and different body I went for the Disco. Which is superb.
