Two weeks ago I posted that my horse had to be retired, and would probably only be around for a year or so before having to be PTS due to kissing spine and bone spavin. He was also lame on his front right which the vet thought was soft tissue damage.
Well, after 2 weeks box rest and some bute, I was amazed to hear my vet tell me today that I can actually start working Bertie again! He said he had been concerned he wouldn't be sound again and never expected to him to be as good as he was today.
So the plan is for 2 more weeks box rest (except for a roll in the school and a mooch about while I muck out) then to start lunging him with a pessoa type training aid. Do that for 2 weeks then I should be able to get back on (if he's sound of course). He's 18, and we only did light hacking for the past year anyway, so we will be going very gently.
He was given Tildren today and will only need Bute when I exercise him. I did say to my vet I am not bothered that I can't ride, I just don't want him to be in pain. But he seemed keen that I do something with him.
He's already on Cortaflex but I might look into trying something else.
After two weeks of feeling sorry for myself, I now can't quite believe what I was told today!
