Luckily I dont have much road to hack on until I get to the moor but its a fairly well used road, and not particularly wide. As I was hacking back to the yard a van driver came round the bend towards me and stopped and turned his engine off :)
As I rode past he wound the window down and said 'easier for you to come past me than me come past you'
What a nice chap, luckily my mare is pretty good with vans etc but nice of him not to just squeeze past like lots do!

ps Im not suggesting everyone stop and turn their engines off for me to come past :) :)
But just reminded me there are nice drivers out there :)

that is really nice.
I had one car stop and turn its engine off (first time ever) and pony stopped (forgets she also has hindlegs) and ended up falling on her knees. i landed on my feet in front of pony and couple in car were shocked and apologetic - had to explain they did the right thing but my pony didn't understand.

Isn't it great when we meet courteous drivers?!
My horse loses his nerve when he sees a motorbike. Last summer we met a string of scamblers on a green lane: he was brave and stood still but would not pass even though they had all pulled in and switched off.
The front one then said 'Will it help if we take our helmets off?', which they did. Horse could hardly believe there were humans under those helmets (he likes humans), and walked past those bikes like a very brave boy
I am now looking for a tame biker to do some more desensitising training - so we can meet moving bikes without taking off!

Morland - yes it's lovely, the bikers sound lovely too. My mare also doesnt like motorbikes very much , fortunately we dont meet them too often and if i hear one coming I try to get out of the way!
It just feels sometimes like us riders are 'in the way' when some of us have no choice but to go on the road to get to the grass!!!
Its just so lovely to come across people who arent in such a rush to get somewhere that they can switch off for us for a few seconds :)

Thats lovely, so restores your faith in human nature when something like that happens

Yes it does, I wonder if he spooked a horse before or something maybe, as thats the first time anyones actually turned off before for me. Seems like one or the other, I once had an old couple drive up behind me and blast the horn!!!!

Were there any details so you could ring the company and report it?I bet they get massive complaints but no thankyou s :)
Morland, loved your story, never thought it might be the helmets that cause a problem

How great to hear to many positive stories of drivers who are NOT out to kill anyone!!!

Slightly unrelated as it doesn't involve a horse, but I once came across another car in a single lane road with passing places very far away for both of us, so I popped into reverse and reversed for about 300m to a passing place. When he came past me the man in the other car stopped his car effectively blocking me in. I have to admit I locked my doors and was a bit worried...but he pulled his window down and said "After that reversing I eat my words about women drivers!" (he didn't know I leant to drive in Athens!).

That's nice of him! We have a really considerate truck driver round our way - Brake's commercial catering who deliver to the pubs, well done to you for being polite, slowing down and generally being nice people!!

What a lovely chap!

We weren't so lucky on a hack last weekend. Over the hedge we could see a car followed by a van. We were about to meet them on a bad corner. Luckily the car driver must have seen our hi viz over the hedge and slowed right down. What did the van driver do?? Rev his engine and over take the car slowing down for us!!

Isn't it lovely when you meet considerate drivers?

I met a bike a few weeks ago and my boy was very wary. The biker stopped, turned off his lights and his engine for us. I was very pleased and thanked him profusely on my way past but couldn't see his face because of the dark visor. It turns out it was my sister's boyfriend under there. He said that, if he thought it would have kept the horse calm, he would've got off and lain down in the road because my sister would have castrated him if he'd caused me to fall off! :D

Unfortunately at the time I didn't think to remember what company it was, else I definately would of told them!
Unlike the gas tanker who parked so close to the cattle grid gate I couldn't get through the other day!! I certainly remembered who he was!!
