What a shame....

They are only asking one pound as well. I shudder to think where he will end up. I do think PTS is better in this situation, at least you KNOW they are safe from suffering.

That is too sad for words but we don't know the circumstances. Even so it seems harsh after a lifetime of ownership even though its not my place to judge them.

Poor chap. just as he is getting to the stage where he will take a bit of looking after.

.
Someone asked me the otherday what i would do if i won the lottery. I think i would buy lots of land and take in poor horses like this one. He deserves better bless him.

Poor horse. I just checked his passport number and according to that he is 25 not 22 as in the advert. I wonder if he has found a nice home or some dealer who will sell him on as alot younger. The ad is already 2 weeks old.

Since Monty died i have had a space for an aged old fella that no-one wants........must not get any more horses.........so tempting though

Definetley tempting, poor fella. Fair enough we dont know their circumstances but, she could put him on loan rather then sell him for a pound for god sake!! Atleast then he wont get sold on as a 12year old!

I really like the look of him!

But I've no problem taking on a veteran, I just really need a horse who is great with kids. You do wonder in some cases if people just want to get rid before they have to pay the costsw of PTS and body removal. At least this grey has a semi decent price tag - God knows who will turn up if they are willing to sell for one pound.

Fair do's he is old and has been in one home for years but to be fair what about all those people who would love a nice gentelmen to hack out and bulild confidence on. My first horse was 21 when i first got him and we had great fun for another 8 years a=untill i finally had him put to sleep. Also on HM you have to put in a price it doesnt definatly mean he will be sold for £1 it might just mean open to offers. Hopefully they will vet the home he goes too and keep in contact. There are alot of people out there that would give an old boy a good home just to plod around on and pamper.

I feel so sorry for the poor boy, what a wrench that will be for him. I can only think that his owners must be in desperate circumstances to advertise him like that.

If I had the resources I would get him, we need a third horse at our place, but can't afford another set of vet bills, shoes etc

I get really annoyed with these adverts,
I got my old boy when he was 18 years old, i was 14 and he was my first horse, he taught me everything i know, he was my best friend in the whole world and he was an amazing boy, my soul mate. I had 5 great years on him, then when i retired him i was told by someone to put him down or get rid of him for a companion because i was at the age that i wanted to compete, i told them to get stuffed!! I kept him as a pet for the rest of his life, he had the best of everything because he deserved it, he died in the field last march, suspected heart attack.

I had him for 14 years in all, and i know he had the best retirement possible. I couldnt afford to have two horses so i just stuck to having freddy, this is why it annoys me, they do all the can for their owners and get thrown away when there no good.

Yes, people would love these for happy hackers, if you can trust them. There are some people that say one thing and do another.

Sorry, i shall shut up now as i can go on and on about this... It really touches a nerve.

When my MIL lost her old boy a 40 she was desperate for another veteran to love and plod about the yard on.

There definitely is a market for a safe-as-houses oldies but I have to say, I wouldn't touch a horse that was advertised for £1 as I'd wonder what kind of home he would be coming from.
Anyone that can sell their freind of 17 years for £1 doesn't paint a great picture with regards to previous care such as vet fees etc.

TBH, I don't really see a problem with either advert. They can still choose who they sell/loan the horses to. The horses are by no means in bad condition and would be great for someone not wanting the faff and hassle of something that hasn't been there and done that.

Even the one that has been in the same home since it was 5, some horses don't mind where they are, as long as they have food, friends etc.

I know of jumping ponies selling for 15k at 18 years old, these are just at another end of the market. Hope they both find good homes

Charlie55 You are so right, how lucky was your horse to have you as an owner ? and stencilface you do have a valid point that owners are entitled to sell their horse at any age, I personally do have a problem with these types of adverts but that is my prerogative as your view is yours, I would love to think that there are people out there who would behave as Charli55 has but in my experience they are few & far between

Argh Bless you Charli55, I also have a soft spot for oldies as I had one 40 years ago (I'm old !) who taught me more than anyone/horse has ever done and I too went without riding for 3 years as my parents couldn't afford to keep two horses, I think at the time I was a selfish little cow and possible resented not being able to ride then but how grateful am I for my lovely Mum & Dad trying to instill a bit of responsibility in me ! When my oldie died, in his sleep in his stable, I think my world caved in, I still feel guilty about the resentment I felt at the time so am full of admiration for you ! XX

I don't see that much of a problem with it really - sure I wouldn't sell such an old man certainly if I'd owned for that long but some people have no choice and, just cos it says £1 doesn't really mean a lot. It's more a monetary amount to change ownership i guess as opposed to loan as maybe they are not in a position to take him back should a loan go wrong.

Plus, as said they can choose who to sell him to and plenty of you here say you wouldn't have a problem taking on an old horse so one assumes there are many others who are not members on this forum who would think the same. Not all people have to be dodgy dealers or wanting a free horse to make a few quid on. The majority of people out there are as genuine as the rest of us.

I personally wouldn't have the horse put to sleep whether it be 22 or 25 if it's in good health. Why should the horse have to pay the price for the owners situation whatever that may be.

Can you give me a web site for checking a horse against its passport number?

Would be so grateful thanks

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, I would be very interested to know this too. PM if you prefer...

How can people dare to comment when they don't know the full situation or reasoning behind the price?!
Is it better that they advertise the horse cheaply, get lots of interest and can be very selective, or advertise for a higher price and get little interest, ending up with rushing a sale to the wrong home or the horse simply not being sold and left in a field or something and not touched?
Enough of you have said you'd love to take him on - I assume none of you would buy him and sell him on for a profit!? So there clearly are well meaning people out there.
Why be so quite to criticize someone who may have good intentions?

NED online is where I checked out the horse this was originally posted about. His passport number is in his ad

Well I for one had a horse who was 25 when I got him. He had been through 7 homes since he was 18!!! Even if the people you sell to have good intentions, circumstances change and horses get passed around. Also, people often take them on without realising the extra care (and money!) that veterans need.

Monty was actually sold to his previous owner as 15 years old! I am probably feeling sensitive since it has only been two weeks since he was PTS but I truly think that older horses deserve to live out their final years without being moved around.

True, we don't know the specifics but I have been in financial trouble before (took an 8K pay-cut!) and still managed to look after my old boy in the manner he was accustomed to. He owed me nothing and deserved a happy ending.

Sol, I "dare" quite often and believe that having an opinion based on experience is a basic human right, I do not know if the people advertising have good intentions or not nor do I know what their circumstances are but I do believe on having an opinion and expressing it, you also, are entitled to your opinion and I welcome your comments even if I differ in your interpretation of them.
edited to add....Montyandzoom, how lucky was your horse, like Charlie55's to find you ! sorry for your loss and hope you gain comfort from the fact that you were brave enough to do right by your horse Xx

you can pm if you prefer. Also makes me feel popular.

FWIW, my horse is staying with me until he dies, it's the least I can do for the bestest man in my life. Just hope it isn too soon, he's only 9.

There's so many of these posts these days and they're really unfair. If a horse is fit and healthy and enjoying life, even if it is a quieter one then i see no reason not to let them continue to enjoy life if circumstances prevent keeping them any longer. It is obviously not a decision taken lightly after over 15 years and i think it is very rude and uncalled for to criticise it without knowing all the facts. I rode a 22yr old that would give most younger horses a run for her money. Her owner was worried she might have to sell her at one point because of finances. Should she have had her pts even though she had never been sick, sorry or injured and still poggo-ed for miles and miles out on hacks? Same with the 26yr old i ride at the moment, she is absolutely full of life and despite a bit of a dipped back is as strong and happy as ever. She could have another 5 or more years left of happy life yet, her dam passed away in her latter 30s only a couple of years ago.

IMO selling a horse is always a risk, and younger horses can be passed around and at risk just as much as veterans.

All you can ever do is vet the home the best you can and try to keep in touch, which i'm sure these owners will. It's probably a heartbreaking decision and they most likely only want the very best for the horse. If they advertised it for 1000, as a safe hack then they would be getting comments about being unrealistic. Money is obviously not as important to them as their friend getting a good home.
