I see nothing wrong with selling a fit , sound older horse. Many times these horses have a lot to offer, and there are people out there who want/need an older, been there done it type.
Its not a sign of the times, people have been selling older horses for years. Horses are living longer, and 20 is no age at all for a lot of horses. I think a lot of people are being very unrealistic about keeping horses forever! circumstances change, things happen beyound our control. Although i think it very comendable of those that manage to keep there horses all there lives. i think youll find you are in the minority.
