....thats Over Protective Mother Syndrome Strikes Again.
*bangs head on desk*
After all the hoo harrr switching dates for hen do just so I could take Mackenzie to his second dressage debut whish I was highly excited about and meet up with fellow HHOr Chickenbum sorry Chickininabun lol
(I swear shes going to slap me on Sunday), turns out old Macker Pants developed a suspicious looking lump on his rear offside pastern which I noticed the other week
RI said ''hes not lame so dont worry about it, farrier said ''if hes not lame dont worry about it, friends said ''if hes not lame dont worry about it.
Do I listen ..no, did I worry....yes
Rang the vets at the weekend and demanded he got down this week asap with his X-ray machine.
Seriously though, it was and still is a very hard lump, I mulled over if it was just a knock so gave it time to go down, there was no changes, noticed he was stiff after some work on Saturday and immediately imaged the worst, what if its this, what if its that (as I do) connected it with the lump, all sorts was going though my mind, ringbone arthritis you name it, so I had to have the x-rays and examination done for sheer piece of mind, the trot up and flexion test was all good .however the vet visit was a rather comical and interesting.
It went as follows:-
While I was waiting for him to arrive I did the usual, caught him, gave him a groom, tied him up a haynet....half an hour later, still waiting (vets must be like farriers
), pottered around and let him graze on some nice grass around the yard....still no sign of the vet and then
''EEEEE ORRRRRRRRRRRRR''
came from one of the stables, yes we have a wild entire mule on the yard (been rescued...long story but only been on the yard for a few days) but I forgot that Muffin the mule was there and that Mackenzie's had never experienced any muleage before.
So it was no surprise that Mackenzie went nuts, obviously wondering what the hell it was.
Decided to walk him over to the mules stable just show him what it was, so then he'd understand where the noise was coming from and hopefully settle.....yeah, not a good idea he was petrified of it (its only stands at about 12 hands high lol
)
Anyway walked him round and he started to settle again, still no sign of the vet so I decided to bob him in the stable while I went back to my car to ring the practice to see where he was, he was running late but said he'd be there in 5 to 10 minutes.
Meanwhile the mule was eeeeorrrring.
Vet pulls up and I said jokingly that my friend said to tell you that she hopes you've got your body armour, your tin hat and your life insurance is up to date, cos you've got a date with Mackenzie.
*we both chuckled* ''why he can't be that bad can he?'' *laughs* as we both walk across the yard towards his stable, only to be greeted by a lathered, sweated up horse, box walking around the stable, barging at the door for his bid for freedom.
''oh, I see, hmmmmm *scratches head* OH GOD he's certainly grown, is he normally like this?'' said the vet with a very worried look on his face.
No he's just a bit wound up
(explains about the mule etc)
Goes out to the drive to do trot up and flex test, Mackenzie decided this was time to show off, floated up and down the drive like an Arab...me in tow, sound as bobbin.
I said he's not normally like this honest but he is a bit riggy.
''I know''
how do you know? (as it was a different vet)
''I can tell just by looking at him''
Told him about the whole rig test saga and hormone injection and that it didnt work, he said hes not surprised .it only works on dogs!
Takes him back to the into the yard and back in the stable before the x-rays.
''Think we better sedate him, hmmmm, actually I'll give him a bit more than I'd normally give because I think he's going to need it''
*Vet goes to open door*
I said I think it might be best if I bring him out of the stable for you to inject him.
''why, will it be safer that way?''
Yes I think so, put it this way, a very wound up horse + mule creating in the background + stranger (....aka vet with a very big needle in hand), it can only go one way.
''what's that?''
One of us two will end up getting sedated!!!
''hmmm yes, good thinking, let's have him out''
Harpooned needle into side of neck straight away then Mackenzie went very quickly to land of the fairies where the magic mushrooms grow, so the x-rays could be done without him destroying £1000's of equitment.
He agreed that x-rays needed doing, chatted about a few things, could be ringbone as it looks like it, but then it could be a few other things, or just a simple bang, but he said if you expect the worse and it isn't then at least anything else is good news, if it is ringbone then no it's not good but we can work round it but until he's looked at the x-rays to see exactly what if it, might be nothing so no point getting ahead of ourselves.
I mentioned about the school, about the soft deep surface etc if that could of caused it, said well yes and no, better to have a soft surface than some of the harder ones, it's better for the legs as it conditions them from early age, harder surfaces obviously causes more concussion type injuries and more problems but softer ones can cause more flexing and twisting but a trauma (a bang etc) can also bring on ring bone, if that's what it is but not to speculate just yet.
Anyway to cut long story and a sleepless night a bit shorter
Turns out after the vet rang me last night to give me the results, theres nowt up with it! (still havent got a reason to shoot it lol
) vet said hes got a perfect joint, its not ringbone or anything else, no bony abnormalities, nothing to worry about *phew* its just fibrous tissue formation which will have been caused by a bang/kick etc but will take time to go but wont cause him any problems.
So because Mackenzie not been worked this week, dressage was out of the question for him, totally gutted but at least hes ok.
So Im taking the little mare for a bit of pony squishing and to show people how its not done
but it will be a giggle all the same, prepare for some serious dressage debacle camel impression photos next week
.I kid you not
.
Im going to request the Muller advert/cow on beach music to be played as we perform out test, (think Dexter cow cunningly disguised as dark brown TB).
Starbucks coffee and a cream bun anyone for getting his far?
