I've had a horrendous weekend! Farrier was booked for Saturday lunch time so I spent the morning running around trying to get all their legs clean and dry before he showed up.

Then all hell broke loose! Ben (my 16yo gelding) was tied in the yard, and another livery's horse escaped, charged at Ben (who pulled back and broke free) and then chased Ben around the yard, down the field etc - for ten minutes this horse was going at Ben with his mouth wide open taking chunks out of him. Ben kept falling over and the other horse was jumping on him - I thought Ben was going to be killed! Eventually we managed to break them up and I managed to sort Ben out - he had several cuts on his legs, and lots of lumps and grazes on his neck and body but nothing life threatening. Luckily he is just a bit stiff and sore. Anyway, stood in the yard, tears streaming down my face I realised how much this horse means to me, and how because of the other 6 horses at home at the moment I don't have time to spend with my special lad. What with my increased responsibilities at work and longer working hours, I think this is the right decision for them. I spoke it over with my OH and he is happy with my decision, so we have decided Wonky (in my sig) is being sold, the mares are going out on loan, and the youngsters will also be put up for sale. Ben will of course stay. It's a really hard decision to make, but I think it will be better for them in the long run

To round the weekend off, my OH had a massive haylage bale(one of those big round ones) fall on top of him and he was very lucky to not have been seriously hurt!! Lots of bruises and very sore but luckily no lasting damage!

I entirely agree with your decision - horses are meant to be fun - not all bloody hard work. I had 8 last winter, and 3 this winter - mainly cause I am 37 wks preg and have an unhorsey hubby - but none the less I am a lot happier now that I have fewer to split my time between. Admittedly I could never get back down to one tho - hard enough to part with 5!

Definately not having much fun at the moment, I just feel like I am chasing my tail all the time trying to get everything done.

Luckily Ben is ok - he does have one nasty cut on the heel of his off-hind, and he's a bit stiff, but the vet is happy there is no lasting damage. Other livery was very apologetic, and it was just one of those things, but very very scary at the time.

TBH I'd do the same if I were you.

I find it a struggle giving proper attention to three never mind six. I am in the same situation in that my old boy is left out cos he is so easy and therefore I find I have to spend the time with my mad horse, but also my friend and I have a new foalie and I love spending time with her, seeing her explore the world and learn new things is really rewarding.

I think you'll find you'll enjoy them more when you cut down, otherwise its just a constant rush to service them rather than spend quality time with them.

It's frustrating as he is looking so good at the moment - he has really kept his weight on this year, has a lovely shine to his coat and good topline! I am booked in to take my trailer test in Feb, and if all goes well I would like to take him out more this year, as I wont I have to rely on my OH to drive us everywhere!

Hi

If its any help, if you e-mail me the adverts I can put them up at Wix equestrian centre for you.

It is so much easier with fewer horses, I now have 3 and time for a social life.
