Following on from my post last week asking how to stop my rugs getting torn by the other gelding in the field (the boys keep playing)..someone suggested cribbox but it's not working..had another rug ripped today.. Does anyone still use canvas rugs?? Thought about getting one maybe even second hand to go over the top of his rugs as they are so hardy.. has anyone tried this or know where I can get one from??

I thought of getting a really high denier one but then one of the other boys has one of the really strong Horseware ones & he's got a rip in that as well.. They literally play all day even with all the grass they've got, it's like tug of war..absolute night mare!!!

Canvas still rips. I'd put muzzles on them if you are having to pay a fortune in buying new rugs or a half bib muzzle. I know these are good if they are chewing their own rugs. Not so sure if they are playing with each others. I think with the crib box spray you'd have to reapply after every rainfall. I wonder if clove oil in a carrier would work? I know dogs dislike clove oil and it stops them from chewing. Or chuck them out naked - no rugs to rip then!!

Naked!! Thats harsh   :D

My boys play like mad, pulling each others rugs, grabbing legs, biting rugs, pulling buckles, for hours on end and yet they still come in with their rugs undamaged. but I think it is because I have the Fal vikings, virtually indistructable. I think it is the Denier as well that you need to look to . Canvas rugs rip really easily and also are so heavy and revolting to deal with.

Well here's my issue.. it's one particular cheeky horse that does the rug ripping although they all play I know & have seen a few time who the culprit is.. so it's not my boy who needs the muzzle it's someone elses.. Also naked isn't an option..I have a tb that's in a heavyweight with a l/w underneath & still hasn't been that warm, he's not even clipped but hasliterally no coat this year (he's the only one that plays with this certain horse & gets a ripped rug.) I'll probably have to have a word with the owner tonight..she was mortified & embarrassed when he ripped my last rug & wanted to pay for my repair etc, i thought that maybe it was a one off but obviously not, she's such a sweet lady & I feel embarrassed having to tell her..

Not sure what you can do then really. If your horse is playing with hers then they are both guilty. My TB is the one that causes all the problems as he just won;t stop playing an incites the others to join in. I would never muzzle him as he is only being a horse. But then they are all my horses in this particular field so no one elses involved which makes it easy. I would probably just keep buying second hand rugs off ebay, cheaply and swap everytime he has one damaged and get repaired. Would probably work out cheaper than new ones.
