I've known two mules, both VERY stubborn, agressive, and oh so strong ("fond" memories of one of them (around 11-12hh?) dragging 4 adults round to the field because he didn't want to stand on the yard!

Ah, brings back memories of riding Tippy the mule down a trail at the Grand Canyon several years ago.
Excellent mode of transport on that terrain and Tippy (a skewbald who carried all the first aid kit) showed me his canter capability at the bottom of the trail on the way back up.
I don't know if the same in the U.K. but there was a very active mule society in America where mules partake in everything from dressage to jumping - and no, without a carrot on a stick being waved in front!
