Hi,

I was told that geldings go through a naughty stage for a while (don't want to be caught, being naughty when ridden...) Is this true? if so, what age does this start?

Thanks .

I wouldnt call Jed "naughty" but more mischeivious (sp?).

Ive had him since he was 3 he's now 13 and is still a little terror most days!

I love it though, id rather him be like that than dull with no personality.

Riz has been naughty from the day he was born - was evil from the age of 5 until about 8, got alot nicer after that. In fact he can be a complete softy, but still has his naughty streak - he's just turned 26 :-)
Oh, and I wouldn't have him any other way!!

'Naughty phases'..... Well, mine is 6, I've had him since he was 3 and I'd say he was 'naughty' (biggest understaement of the year!!) age 3, age 4 and half age 5! He then switched into an absolute dream horse and he is now my perfect partner

My horse was naughtiest when he was four took a year and a half for him to snap out of it now he's an angel my friends horse is like this at the moment but he is only just 5 so we're hoping he will snap out off it soon

Can you clarify what you all mean by naughty? Mine is six and is an absolute dream horse in every way, except has the occasional desire to buck. And I mean BUCK! He is a 16 h Irish cob type. I have had him for 9 months and it has happened approx 5 times. Unfortunately always resulting in injuries to me. Now have completely lost my nerve and doubt I will ride him ever again... I am so unhappy about the situation, as in every other way he really is good. Sadly will be for sale very shortly .....

I've had mine since he was 4, he's now 11. I don't know that he ever had a "naughty" phase. He was very "wilful" for a good few years, but I don't think it was really naughtiness. I think it was a combination of me blowing his mind when he was a baby and making a horse I couldn't hold on grass, lack of schooling and me riding badly.

I don't think you can sit around waiting for a "naughty phase" to happen - I think that might cause one!! I don't see there's any reason for a well-adjusted, nicely brought on horse to suddenly go mad. I'm sure he'll ask more questions of you as he learns and his confidence grows, but I wouldn't call that a phase, just growing up!

but i think it possibly could be a naughty stage as hes now much easier to catch etc.

WOW! @ Age 28!

Mine is 11 years old and he's a total [****] when I want to pick his feet out - he refuses to let me. And I've recently cut all his feathers off so there is nothing to grab hold of now.

Oh and he refuses to walk on sometimes - I've only had him two months so he's still seeing what he can get away with me.

I will win.... eventually.

And he decided to play the big I AM and mount one of the girls in the field (so I'm told - didn't witness this).

But I love his charactor, he's a perfect first horse

I bought my horse as a small, weedy 4yo very quiet and well mannered. He grew into a strapping, muscle-bound 5/6yo and for a year or so did try to use his new-found strength and power against me. With regular schooling and a firm approach he snapped out of it, and is now a dream horse again!

My boy is 11 and I've owned him since he was 8. However from the age 7 to now he's been a cheeky monster!
Mounts the mares in his feild, regularly unties himself/another horse and walks off (thats always amusing though)
Will play fight with you (i.e he tries to steal your wellies while you are still wearing them)
Hs run off with the hose pipe before, thrown his bucket at people.
But he's lovely, if you scratch him in just the right place, he'll love you for the next hour, not let you leave and he'll groom you back

I bought Mick as a 6 year old and he was a nightmare all round. When the horses were waiting at the gate in winter to come in he would rear and play and he actually went over backwards twice. the fool..

If a horse was standing snoozing he would canter a circle round it and bite its nose on the way past, and would do this over and over again untiil the horse kicked him.

There was a little pony he would chase up the field, then they would turn round and it would chase him back down.. this would happen for about half an hour and in the snow.. I was having a right panic attack..

Eventually I think the others horses got sick of him and pinned him in the corner and gave him some welly, as he came in one day quite battered bless.. (I think Old Gits Screaming Lord Such helped sort him out..lol..)

Then, at 10 yrs, the penny dropped about life and behaving himself and everything changed.. thank god.

I am told Irish horses take a long time to mature.. He has been a great learning curve and I now have an amazing horse, but Never Again..... He is 16h by the way.
