What age to start jumping?

I think it depends on the type of horse. ie natives and TB mature quicker than warmbloods. Also it depends how high you are jumping. I think it's descusting how high some 4/5 yr olds jump at competitions.

Agree. I think it should be assessed on a case by case basis. Think it depends how frequently it's done too....

I totally agree with the height that is terrible!but im talking about small cross poles around 1 ft,lol, sounds pathetic dont it but just wanna start jumping her as a couple of months ago she jumped over a 4 ft fence out of the school with complete ease!I was furious with her,but gobsmacked,i just wanna get her started but without over facing her as i dont want to scare her, shes used to jump wings, poles and the general floor work.and shes rising 5 and a 15.2hh cob x tb?

I think she should be fine as long as you keep the sessions short to begin with, keep the jumps small and don't do it everyday. (although i'm shore you wouldn't though:D)

I'm by no means an expert but I would say small cross poles wouldn't cause a problem!

At least you already know she has a cracking jump on her! You could try loose schooling her over a couple too?

As long as it's not jumping overkill and you think she can cope then go for it :D (As I said to LW in her post about Herbie- you know your horse better than anyone on here and are therefore in the best position to judge what's best for them. Nice to have second, and sometimes thirtieth opinions though :))

I dont think it's disgusting to jump a 4yr old. Some of what they are asked to do may seem 'over the top' but if you think about it, a jump up to about 3ft/3ft6 doesn't do much more to the body than a cnater stride, and most horses will be able to jump 3ft without a problem. I'm not saying i would jump my 4yr old over a huge course, i would just go with how they feel and not push them too far.

I'm sure youre 5yr old will cope just fine!

Ok i will go with my flow then, she is a horse who loves her work and does become bored easily if not worked properly, lol,in other words she is very intelligent,i would loose school her but she was out in the school loose that day and she just turned and went for it!give her,her due she was super scopey, but i crapped myself!as the ground was lower on the other side, lil bugger!I will start her small and gradually work my way up with her.but thanks everyone so far i am happy to start her now.

I forgot to add a proviso:

It will be OK to jump your 5yo...... as long as you get plenty of pics to post :D

Good luck!
