I'm 58 this week and I was wondering what age is to old to ride,do people think we're to old to ride when getting neare to 60. The only thing I worry about is coming off and breaking bones.luckiley I have a good cob who looks after me most of the time.

Hi

My friend is nearly 64 quite short and she is still riding her very nappy 16.3hh oldenburg who can be a right pain in the arse! She has now taking on a yonger/green cob who is smaller and easier for her to get on/off but can be strong.

as long as your happy on the horse your riding just keeping going. I hope i can still ride when i get to my 60`s.

I am 68 and still riding 4 times a week. not very far and not very fast but I shall carry as long as I can. Rufty is now 20 and when he is unable to be ridden I shall then give up. Hopefully we have a few more years

Gosh there is a lady that competes locally near me (1m and 1.10m BS classes) and nearly always wins on a pony that looks just as old as she. She must be knocking 70 if not more. Also my hunt master is 70 and still hunting twice a week every season!

I've sold 2 of my horses to women in their late 60's. They are getting ridden 5+ times a week which is more than I could manage.
Many moons ago I used to be in a riding school that had a weekly 84 year old client.

My friend recently fell off at speed in to the arena fence. She phoned me to tell me she was a bit stiff but oh well never mind. She is mid 80s :eek3: and

Last winter when it was minus degrees for months on end. I was huddled in front of the Rayburn eating toast and she was out riding on the Downs.

I've got a friend of 83 who is still riding and mucking out and going out dancing! She's got more life in her than I have now so don't think i'll still be going at that age. Think you just go with how you feel, some are old at 60 some are still very youthful.

when I was 17yrs old (many yrs ago) and teaching at a riding school/livery yard one of my clients was 74 and had never been around horses or ridden before, he had a weekly lesson for 18months and then went on to learn to drive a pony and cart so that he could take a disabled girl on the yard out driving-he bought his own little mare after and was still driving her into his early 80's

Well, you don't want to fall off as you get older, but crumbs 60 - you hopefully have MORE time to ride as you get towards 70.

My sister is over 70, and a lady down the roads was riding well into her 80s and even when her faithful cob got too old to hunt she went out and bought a pony so she could carry on.

Just keep going until you don't want to. But what would you spend your money/time on then?

My first riding instructor was 84 when she stopped teaching me. She did all lessons riding and leading me, walk trot canter gallop and jump on the lead. Amazing ponies and even more amazing woman.

The pony I used to ride lived to 43 too. Something in the water round there!!

Me too, after having a 10 year gap without them, I realised how much money and time wasted on stupid things and men. I will be riding or owning horses till the day I die :)

I refused to stop when I was pregnant, so I don't see why a bit of arthritis should stop me. I'm hoping for maximum disapproval at the funeral "fancy trying to do that at her age"!

Only in my 40s atm, so still at the 'embarassing my children' stage...

For as long as I can manage to get on! And when I can't get on ill drive them! Ok I've got quite a few years yet (hopefully) till I'm at that stage and still need to find a driving pony and instructor and lean the ropes and have a few years driving practice first :)

A friend of mine used to hunt her cob, and there were 3 sisters who rode out and went hunting literally up until the day before they died. They were 82, 88 and 94!!
They had a very can do attitude, and would ride out in all weather! I think riding keeps you young. My great great grandfather was a hunt master and didnt start riding till his early 40s, stopped in his late 90s after tripping over a dog and injuring his knee, and he died a few months after of plain old age

Oh definitely keep going love. I don't plan to stop until I can't get on or off and my husband decided to learn to ride 3 years ago at the age of 68 so there's still plenty of time for you to keep going.

Mine got the idea from Western movies of course. We are riding into the sunset and plan to keep on.
