As you can see my horses rug has rubbed the mane. Trouble is I have an SJ/XC event coming up soon. How can I make her look more presentable? Don't really want to hog her, I've done a running plait in the past but its a big gap, or I could pull it? I'm just not sure what to do for the best. Help!

Thank you :)

Oh god this is a disaster! If it was me I would prob just roll the small bits in a ball and put the elastic around it as if its in a plait!
Alternatively you can now get horse hair extensions :p

Do you have any photos of her stood up? I'd be tempted to pull it all short and remove any feathers, and just start again on the hairy front... Unless of course she is an out and out hairy.

It is a disaster! She lives out all the time but I clip her legs anyway due to stampy/itchy legs and I don't show her and in winter he has a rug on when needed. I think the best is pull it short? But I am scared to do that, eeeek!

My pony has full and flowing locks ATM ..and would love to go sj or xc ..maybe u should take him instead ? I could maybe have your one ?? :)

How about pulling whole mane - not too short - then keeping some hair back to "bulk" up any plaits you have on the problem area (like hair extensions)

"Disaster" is a bit of a strong word. My horse's rug has done the exact same thing to her mane and while I'm kind of annoyed about it, I asked myself, am I going to roach or cut it? Nope. Then I just have to live with it. I doubt the horse cares.

Good ideas everyone :) well I don't have to plait as it is Xc too but just trying to work out what's best to do. We wear Xc clothes so may look a bit odd plaited up, but the running plait I don't mind-to pull or not pull.

Ha you trying to steal her :) ill take any ponio Xc

I think it's because my horses mane is so think and long it's a real contrast...I just don't want to cut off her beautiful long mane but I know I may have to!

If you do pull I dont think id make it all as short as the short bit as thats SO short but even having the rest of it shorter than it is now would make it look less obvious!

Like others have said i doubt she minds :) again, if you did hog her or pull short and you didnt like it it would grow back eventually too.

she's lovely btw :)

Pull it level. It will grow back over winter anyway. Our old Secion A used to rub her mane at the end of each summer, I'd pull it over winter and it would grow back for Spring!

Mine is exactly the same due to being nibbled on while being groomed by her mate in the field. I call them the naughty nibblers!! She is an Arab cross so I keep it short, then plait her up and try my best with the 2 almost non existent plaits where it has all but gone. Very frustrating!!! :-(

I wouldn't hog before a xc. You never know when you might need to grab hold of that mane :D
Seriously - What Hairycob said

Thank you for all your great suggestions. I've hogged and xc'ed her before but made no decisions yet. The thing is her rug rubs her over winter so also, how am I going to stop it happening so I don't have this issue? I think the only answer is a Lycra good but not so sure of these!

She's now going to have a bath soon too, she's going to love me hey!

Found some pictures:

Couple years back and hogged

Not a very good pic but short mane (and sweaty horse!)

And with a running plait (you can see where it's started to come undone on the shorter areas! But doesn't stop her going for it, look at her go!! :D )

I agree with Thistle, if feather is clipped off, then she should have either a pulled mane or hogged. I'm not a massive fan of hogged manes, but she looks fabulous hogged. :)

What a stunner, she's fab!!

Agree that she looks super hogged and you could use a neck strap for any 'exciting' things you do together.

Tell anyone who's negative about it that it's no 'biggie' and really doesn't matter anyway.

For future, try spraying lots of Show Sheen or something very similar on the inside of the neck section of the rug and it should stop any rubbing out of the hair.

Good Luck!!

Definitely hogg her. It looks really scruffy long and exceedingly smart and clean hogged. Why wouldn't you.

All of mine (should and do) have long mane by the way so I'm not an obsessive hogger but its crystal clear that's what she suits.

If you want a long, full mane, you can't use a neck cover or combo rug - however if the horse has a long, full mane it doesn't really need the neck cover any way.

If you do hog, then without the protection of the mane the horse will need a neck cover in winter.

If she was mine, I'd leave the mane alone, let the rubbed section grow again and only use standard rugs with no neck cover.

Next year, you could try using Megatek :)
I know that's not much use now but it won't work in the short space of time you have until your competition, but it is great stuff. My boy looked exactly the same at the start of Spring - then his mane started growing back quickly (we went from much, much less than your mare to a good 3-4 inches in a very short space of time... Then I stopped using it as I figured I wasn't going to get him out anywhere over summer so it doesn't really matter!). I would pull short this time, let it grow and use a hood over winter to protect and then use Megatek in Spring if you want a longer mane for summer. She does suit being hogged though - and I'm really not normally a fan.

Anyway - more importantly, have a fabulous time at your event and stick your tongue out at anyone who looks at you funny. (Which they won't, as she's lovely.)
