As some of you know my mare was due to foal on sunday 31st may.....................WELL - she took everyone by surprise and gave birth to a chestnut filly last sunday (24th) at LUNCHTIME in the feild!!!!!!! I rang a friend who is an experienced breeder, and between us we took mum and foal back to the stable as lily was a little late letting her milk down, also her teats were so small the foal - maggie - was having a job getting hold of them!! She is sooooooooooooo tiny, being an early foal, but she soon got the idea of suckling and is very very inquisitive and full of fun!! Thank god i got them in that afternoon as the weather turned foul, I have foal proofed a paddock and have started to turn them out for a few hours at a time, gradually building up to 24/7 turnout as soon as lil feels upto it - she looks to come in in the evening and seems to relax more in the stable - huge foaling box- probably feels she doesn't have to be on guard all of the time! Will post some pics when i have more time!
