What are chestnuts for?

Me and my two friends were having a big debate on this today, and we couldnt actually work it out! No one would believe we had all been riding all our lives!

Werent they the horses toe back in the day when they had 3 toes, but the horse evolved and in effect one in the chesnut, other is the ergot and other is the actual foot. Do correct me if I am just talking bubbles here lol
 
Somone told me they were connected in the womb to hold the foals legs together....

I thought they might be some kind of vestigal 'thumb nail'???
 
They are the remains of the toes that the horse used to have, the others are the splint bones and the ergot at the back of the fetlock. They serve no purppose now and I guess one day they too will go.
 
Clearly I've had a VERY busy day, because I thought you were talking about chestnut coloured horses...here was me sat thinking how could you be so mean about your lovely little ginger ponio!!

you are correct

it was a toe and as they evolved it is now a "chesnut" on their leg. i think it was their 3rd toe?

well you live and learn, like the poster I had not idea what the chestnut was for and alsways thought the ergot was the third toe.
