What are the requirements for novice jumping at a local show?

I know this question is a little vague and I'd imagine each show is different... But in general terms, what constitutes "novice"?

I have a 14.1 pony who I am just backing now. I have not competed at a local show since I was a child (about 20 years ago) I am by no means a brilliant rider and I haven't jumped for years! Would we be able to compete in novice jumping not exceeding 14.2?

Also from your experiences, do you get many adults in the pony classes?

Thanks x

Depends on the show.

I am planning to do beginners jumping on my pony on Sunday at a local show i am an adult and he is 13.2. He has not done much jumping we probably do about 6 courses a year if that and I get nervous though I did used to jump quite a bit many years ago and pony gets very excited. I doubt very much we will win or get placed. We will be in the ponies section and there is no age limit on jumping.

I did make the mistake a few years ago of going to a novice jumping clinic and and when I got there they were jumping 2.6ft-2.9ft and although we coped I now I make sure I do beginners.

You need to look at the schedule as it will have the rules for entry.

The rules just say not to have been placed 1st - 3rd at any show that season?!

I am kid of being pushed into it. I have a 9 year old ex brood mare who I have just backed. Shes taken to jumping in with the boy. 3 times shes been seen clearing a 4ft 6 gate with ease so I am being "encouraged" to take her jumping. Maybe I could try beginners? I'm not a jumper by any stretch of the imagination so although not an actual beginner, I am to jumping?

Showing is so confusing! xx

I would very much class your combo (you and the horse) as novice or even beginners for jumping. Some shows (very annyoyingly!) have kids only on ponies rule, but rarely for jumping.

I have a 14.2 young cob. He's had a couple of jumping lessons, jumps logs out hacking and the occasional jump at home (no arena) and has been round about 6 courses in his entirely life. Although he did come 3rd in one of them since there was only 4 in the class :o I still compete him in novice classes (pony or horse depends on what the schedule says). He'll stay doing novice classes until he's jumping round 2'3 ish confidently and with ease.

check with show organisers but round our way for unnafiliated local shows yes adults ride ponies and either anyone can jump novice round or it would state something along lines of "combination not to have been placed 1st 2nd 3rd at novice level more than 3 times" on the schedule.

H/C means entering the class but not being eligble for placings / prizes.
