Could someone please explain business rates to me. I know if I started up an equine business I would have to pay business rates but I have no idea what they are or what sort of money is involved??

I have to pay business rates [ non domestic rates] on my stables, but I can't run a business there on the planning permission.I appealled as next door to my field they have the same 5 stables but no planning permission and they pay nothing ,they just said ,'do you want to complain about her,' which I didn't.
Mine are £500 a year and I believe it is based on what you could rent them out for .

its like council tax for businesses. Amount depends on the business - type, location, size of etc.

If you are freelance and don't work from your own property (ie instructor going to other peoples yards) then you wont be liable.
