What are you opinions on turning out 24/7 with a hunter clip???

Hi,

I know this has been done at least several times before and if it annoys anyone I do apologies.

I have a 15hh Section D Mare who lives off fresh air. I am planning to clip her on Sunday (hunter clip) and would like to, if possible, leave her out 24/7. She is living out atm and is hardly ever waiting for me at the gate and once finished her tea can't wait to re-join her friends in the field.

All opinions gratefully received.

My 15.1 sec d x is living out fully clipeed with a med weight on, is doing VERY well on it too. Some people look down on it but each horse does good on different things.

I'd say that was fine. Check her for temperature each morning and alter rugging accordingly. I am presuming you rug of course.

Pony had a heavyweight rug with a neck with cooler underneath. When it got very cold I switched from cooler to a mediumweight turnout under the heavy weight.

She is a TB Welsh cross, good doer and in medium work. She is a real 'field' pony and is much happier out. Only issue was that I got some funny looks and the odd comment off know all DIY liveries but I know my pony was happy and warm.

IMO if the horse is well rugged and preffers being out, go for it.

i have a TB that has a hunter clip out 24/7, he is well rugged up to the ears, and very happy. does have trees and hedges for shelter tho?

My hunter is out 24/7 with a hunter clip. She is rugged accordingly and is so much happier now and actually keeps condition better.

With an appropriate rug, why not? Don't see any problem with that

If she's rugged to keep warm...and fed if she drops condition, I don't see a problem.

Yeh, that will be fine. I've got a cob and WB, both fully clipped (except legs) and out 24/7 at the moment.

My 5 yo ISH is fully clipped & out 24/7 with a field shelter. He wouldn't have it any other way!! ATM he's in a duvet + heavyweight FAL with attached neck cover, & when it's colder he has a snuggys hood on too. He looks like he's going jousting but he stays nice n warm.

Both my TB and cob were out 24/7 hunter clipped, rugged from ears to tail, happy and well covered...until our field shut for winter!

Lots of people seem to do it with no ill effect.

I actually think it's rather cruel and would never do it.

i always used to hunter clip my welsh d and he lived out with just a HW most of the winter and was always absolutely fine. he weaved and box walked when stabled so obviously preferred it out.
