What are your opinions on this?

Which bit? I've seen one with window in the hoof taken off both fronts, sole wasn't peeled away like that though. Standard shoes didn't go back on either. I don't think any were on one I saw can't remember what was uses though but similar not so extreme cases were imprints.

I personally wouldn't do it, if that bad I'd pts and the extreme one I saw was pts shortly after. The farrier (family) did it and said at the time he wouldn't have done with his own.

I have only seen a horse bled out through the sole once.
It was a lovely cob mare that the owners allowed to get very overweight. She had laminitis overnight in all four feet.

Vet treatment was not going anywhere and my old farrier came to have a look (he had long since retired) and bled her out on all four feet.

She was muck relieved and with her feet well padded we were able to stand her in the stream for several hours a day.
She came sound, lost a lot of weight, was being ridden regularly by a pupil of mine, kept on a strict diet and was totally sound. Grazing was limited to a small paddock with another laminitic pony and the odd hour in a still well grazed but larger area.

The owners then decided she was 'to thin' and turned her out in a 15 acre field that had been cut for a second crop of hay. She was off all four feet within 24 hours.
I was asked to treat her again but really hadn't the heart to do so because I knew they would keep doing the same thing so, had her PTS.
