My TB x WB has 2 feeds a day, each has: 1 stubbs scoop alfa a original (changing to oil next week), 1 cup (500g) of topspec balancer, 1.5 cups (about 750g) topspec conditioning cubes. Also has about 3 sections of hay a day. He's looking a bit on the skinny side, sooo I was wondering how much everyone else feeds & what to keep the weight on? I'm thinking changing to alfa a oil will put more weight on? and i was thinking maybe adding sugarbeet or allen & page calm & condition as apparently that's like sugarbeet with more calories? :)

I've changed my feed regime totally in the last few years - and have cut out most hard feed.

I now go for ad lib hay (so there is always quite a lot left in the morning) and just chaff with a feed balancer now they are in at night. When they were in their summer field and the grass was almost gone, they'd get a bale of hay a night between them.

Lots of fibre is the way to keep weight on. I have a TB and an arab x, and keeping their feed simple and fibre (hay mainly) based keeps them calm and I am sure helps them to maintain their weight.

They do have fantastic grazing however which helps.

My lad is an 8yo 16.1hh ISH but looks more like a full TB. He struggles to keep weight on which is new for me as my ISH mare lived off thin air. He has a 5.5k haylage net every night and his hard feed includes 1 scoop of midlands, 1 scoop of high fibre cubes and 1 scoop of speedi-beet. I am watching this thread with interest as I am considering getting a nutritionist over to the yard to talk to anyone who might be interested.

As a recommended by a variety of HHOers last week I am trialling this

ad lib haylage (not a trial, they both get this always)

readi grass as chaff (switched from alfalfa/hifi)
Baileys outshine (last year I fed calm and condition)
speedibeet (he always gets lots of this too so not so much of an experiment)
pink powder

If this isn't enough I am going to do what Martlin suggested and put oats in there too. He did ok last year but didn't look spectacular so I'm trying something new this year which will hopefully keep him a bit shinier :)

My TB is having 2 feeds a day.
Each feed consists of - chaff (about 5 handfuls) 2 small mugs of micronized barley and a scoop of sugar-beet and oil :)

My very poor doer TB is on:

Ad-lib hay at night
Very good grass 10 hrs a day

Alfa-A
Blue Chip Original
Speedibeet
These three are split between two feeds.

He's looking very good on this, has been on the speedibeet the moment the temp dropped below 4 degrees.

My WB has 2 buckets a day. He has 1 scoop C&C (A&P), 1 scoop beet, loads of chaff (Fibergy), selection of succulents eg carrots/ apples/ pears etc.(he won't always eat his bucket without them) his Cornecrescine and his Coligone. Also ad-lib very good quality home grown haylage. He also has a box lick, the meal in a lick ones. He is a nice weight at present and is steady on that diet. He has to have a low starch feed as he has sensitivity to cereals.

My 15.2hh 4yo TB mare has for breakfast:
handful of chaff
1/4 scoop of Saracens recoup mix
1/4-1/2 scoop speedibeet

for dinner she has
a big double handful of chaff
1/2-3/4 scoop of mix
3/4 scoop of speedi beet

both meals have oil and carrots added. She also gets a treat ball at night with a few handfuls of nuts in and a haynet as full as I can stuff it, then about half a haynet in the morning to have with her breakfast before I go to work to last her till my friend gets there to put her out later on.
She seems to have lost a bit of weight recently hence now having a breakfast which will increase as we get into
winter.

My tb is currently on the 'okay into winter' stage, so ideally i'd love for him to be a bit rounder!

He's currently on ad-lib haylage
1 Stubbs scoop of Alpha Easy (from Chestnut Horse Feeds - this is brilliant stuff!)
1 Stubbs scoop of Speedi-beet
1 Stubbs scoop of Conditioning Cubes
A 'squirt' of oil

I'm finding that it is starting to take effect after only a week on it. His coat is mega shiny since being on the Alpha Easy (the oil was added in later).

Fingers crossed he'll pick up some more before the bad weather sets in :)

My boy who is a 16.1 TB 10 years, is on 2 feeds of the same a day...

This is per feed...

1/2 scoop Alfa A oil, 1/2 scoop of Spillers Senior Conditioner, and half a mug of Equi Jewel (Fantastic stuff.. rice bran and is great for those in hard work as it also reduces the levels of latic acid in muscles, so I use it with my mare who had azatoria couple of years ago.)

he is also on about a 'wheelie-bin' of haylage a day lol

xx

The BEST thing I have ever used for condition on my mare is just grass by d&h.
so my 7yo tb mare gets
cool mix (with rolled oats when in harder work)
sugar beet (molassed)
just grass (AMAZING STUFF) (better than alpha a I think and cheaper)

Ad lib hay, and turn out on good grass for 8ish hours a day plus 1 feed of Baileys no 4, D&H conditioning mix some Mollichaf Show-shine (to slow him down as otherwise he inhales it) he's doing really well on this especially as he's in hard work once temp goes sub 10 i'll add a small breakfast. I don't like changing feeds so I find something that he likes and doesn't send him daft and stick with it and just amend the amounts as required.

My 12 yo TB is on good grass 24/7 and I give him a handful of pony nuts, two cups of Baileys Outshine and a small amount of Calm and Condition. He'll only eats small portions and he's doing great on this. He is looking very well, in good condition with a shiny coat.

The poor doer 16.3hh tb I had had two feeds a day, each with half a scoop of chaff, 1 scoop of Bailey's conditioning cubes (well Polo Cond. Cubes, but the same thing for cheaper!) a good mugful of Bailey's Outshine and a mugful of Bailey's Stud Balancer as well.

Looked pretty well on it, and he was a really rangy horse that was very difficult to get looking well covered.

There's no substitute for good grass or haylage though.

my 16.2hh tb is still out 24/7 on good grass and just one feed a day of: 1 scoop (stubbs) d+h conditioning nuts, 1/2 scoop of fibre beet, 1/2 scoop( gradually increasing to replace the nuts) of mollichaff conditioning mix and 1 scoop of chaff. So far looking good and performing well. He will live out in the winter and get ad-lib haylage. Plus 2 feeds a day.

My tbs having 1/2 Stubbs scoop baileys no 4 1/2 mug of outshine and grass hes a terrible doer but still out due to the good weather, and looks better than he's ever done! Someone asked me just yesterday if he was a warmblood! And that's someone knowledgeable he's 16 btw!

My incredibly poor doer TB mare is on Allen and Page Fast fibre, speedibeet and adlib haylage. She looks fantastic on this - porky almost! I think plenty of fibre is the way to keep weight on. When she was in work, she was on Readymash Extra which is an absolutely fabulous feed for conditioning. She currently gets between 8-11 hrs out in the field per day and is stabled the rest of the time.
