My OH had to give up mucking out our horse on a full bed even tho she was on flax because of asthma.
Now she's on rubber mats it's a lot better and although I don't make him muck out very often as the horse is at part livery, he's quite happy to skip her out or put her bed down if I'm doing something else. She has been on chopped rape straw and on flax and both are OK as long as she hasn't got too much bed.
Horse and husband benefit from the same low dust regime!
Both of mine are on mats I still wheeze when laying the bed, but not half as bad when I used to full bed of shavings I could stand being in stables as couldnt breathe!!! x
I have asthma and have been hospitalised 3 times so i would say it is quite bad although i do have it under control. That said mine has never been brought on by dust so i have one on shavings and one on straw and never have a problem putting beds down, i must be lucky.
I don't have asthma but my pony with breathing problems does best on rubber and chopped cardboard...it seems to be dust free for mucking out...good luck!
i have quite bad asthma and i have great difficulty at college with the shavings i physically cant open the bales without it bringing on a small attack. at home i have straw and have 3 horses and sometimes 4 if the pony is in to muck out fully and i have no problems at all with straw.
I have asthma and hayfever and am fine with shavings and horse hair now, but can't bed down straw without sneezing lots.
However I used to be a lot worse before I got Singulair tablets (think they are also called Montelukast) prescribed by my doctor, which solved most of my problems
