What Bedding Should I Use for my Full Clipped Gelding?

I have a Connemara Gelding called Toby, and he has a Full Irish Clip.
The current yard I keep him at provides Long Straw Bedding. Toby is turned out throughout the night and brought in for a couple of hours during the day on Part Livery.

In a couple of weeks I am going to move Toby to a different yard. It is a DIY Livery Yard and here Toby will be turned out during the day and brought in at night. This yard does not allow Long Straw Bedding, but does allow Flax, Hemp, Shaving etc. All other beddings apart from Long Straw.

What Bedding would you recommend I use for Toby? He is allergic to Paper Bedding.

Thank You,

Charlotte.

Hello and welcome to the form. Toby sounds lovely, I have a soft spot for connies :) We will, of course, need to see pictures of him asap :)

As for bedding it depends on lots of factors, I have used most things over the years. These days I mostly use wood pellets, on a deep litter system. Very cheap but take a bit of getting used to. I also like flax, again deep littered, it's very absorbent and makes a nice solid bed. My all time favourite is Megazorb, the most absorbent bedding I have used but pricey to set up. I'm not a shavings person, I find it too fiddly and I end up throwing too much clean away when I muck out, same for paper and that blows everywhere too!

Those are just my thoughts and you'll probably find the next person will say the opposite!
