What bedding would you use for a smelly pony?

My boy is currently on straw (£3 a bale) and his stable absolutely stinks! Most of his wee runs to the front of the stable and pools, the wee that does get absorbed reeks and my clothes/hair smell awful once I've mucked out ( bearing in mind I muck out before going to lectures etc.)

What bedding would you recommend/do you use? I would prefer to spend similar to what I do now, simply because I can't afford to pay loads (student!).

Any ideas greatly appreciated as I hate smelling of pi$$ :(

Welll...our mare is stinky too.....and what she hasnt eaten she has poo-ed on and mashed around.

We put matting down- initial expense yes- but we only use a flap or so of straw a day and sweep the disgusting remnants out on amorning, let it dry through the day and put a fresh bed down each day.

I'm sure theres other options but TBH we tried em all.....this is the easiest and cheapest.....but pee stinks, end of:(

My stinky, wet, box walking, grey (yes, she is a dream!!!) mare is best on a bedding the yard gets which is a mix of chopped straw, large flake shavings, all dressed with eucalyptus oil. It does smell alot of loo cleaner, but I prefer that to the smell of mare wee! It deals with the wet v well, and is easy to muck out too. She has a good big bed on mats (a small bed is just discusting by the morning) and isn't too grose come the morning!

The best thing to try, as it runs to the front of the box, is some shavings under the straw to absorb the urine, it may cost a little more each week but will solve the pooling problem.

My boy is also a bit of a pee monster!

I use paper bedding in the pee patch (£3.50 a bag) under a full straw bed which is on rubber matting. Once my beds are established I use 1 bag of paper and 1-2 bales of straw (£1 a bale sorry) between 3 boxes per week. I skip out the droppings daily and take out the wet once a week. It is more time consuming as I end up mucking out the straw and paper separately but the paper soaks up the excess pee and it doesn't stink!!

I'm just resigned to straw (and stinking)! My boy is disgusting, very wet and pooey and insists on lying in it so he (and his rugs) are always filthy too.

I tried shavings but he just mixed it all up and it was still horrid - I ended up having to take so much out every day that it was costing me a fortune, so unfortunately back to straw :(

I had rivers of wee and puddles outside my stable hen I was on shavings or straw.

have moved onto straw pellets and they are fab - no more rivers or puddles since!! :D:D

I use flax and hemp bedding, it is more absorbant than shavings or straw. I take out the poo each morning and only remove wet patches at the weekends.

Bliss is brilliant. Soaks up the wee, breaks down quickly on the muck heap and stable doesn't stink. I just take out the poo.

After a winters deep litter I clean out completely, and it still doesn't stink, none of that eye burning ammonia stink, just a bit smelly. Dearer than straw but very good value, I start with about four bales and add one every 10 - 14 days.

What are straw pellets and where do you get them from?

straw pellets are pellets made from compressed straw. When you put them down initially they look like a bed of pony nuts but after the first night of horse walking on them they break up into a sand like bed that is SO absorbent it's scary.

I scoop the poop off the top each day and only take out wet patches every week or longer sometimes.

I bought mine from this guy - http://www.pelletbeds.com/contact.htm

but you can get them here too - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Horse-Bedding-Straw-Pellet-/170722109256?pt=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&var=&hash=item6d70edbc1f#ht_3930wt_1139

When i first started the bed i put down 8 bags and it was about an inch thick - everyday it seemed to grow and grow and by the end of the week it was a good foot deep and had expanded to cover the hole stable.

I have just changed to Laysoft bedding. Its a wood chip. Very absorbant and really has got rid of the smell. Stable still smells like freshly cut wood and I have had it down for 4 weeks. I went in with some others from the yard and got a bulk delivery - worked out at £5 a bag, 1 bag a week.

Hello, just thought I'd update you all.

I decided to start off with the cheapest option which was wood chip bedding from Countrywide and so far it has been a great success!

He does make a bit of a mess (as seen in pic below) but there is NO smell at all!! I'm so chuffed :D

The only thing is I get a little bit OCD, don rubber gloves and pick out individual bits of poo :o

Before and after shots ;)

Phil is as revolting as your lad! I had him on wood pellets which were fab but too expensive so I decided to give sawdust a go on recommendation from a friend at the yard. It was more a sawdust/shavings mix, but it's brilliant to muck out, no wet on top (deep litter) and doesn't smell at all. It's also not dusty :)

7 days of wet (and a night of poo - two photos merged)

i use wood pellets for our stink monsters. they are fab.

^ this

Just started using wood pellets (£3.70 for a 10kg bag) for a dirty and wet Sec A. Was on shavings and I also got fed up with stinking of pee all the time. Finding them great and working really well. Stable smells of wood and bed staying really dry.
